Can I run MacBook Pro without a battery?

The replacement battery in my older MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) is failing. It is not yet overheating or swelling. I've researched the replacement process here and concluded that it is more than I care to undertake. I suspect that the replacement battery now in the device was inferior and the guy who replaced it is now out-of-business. I am nowhere near an Apple Store. I now use the machine largely for internet browsing and viewing documents. I have an iMac for more demanding work.

I am, therefor, wondering it would be possible to remove the battery before it creates problems and run the machine via AC power?

Not really, if you take the battery out the systems SMC logic will go into CPU Safe Mode lowering the CPU’s clocking and pump up the fans.

I think you’re worrying a bit too much, if you take it out putting a new one in isn’t much more. Follow the guide here MacBook Pro 15'' Retina Display Mid 2014のバッテリーの交換 and for $85 USD you can get a good replacement MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Battery with the tools which are needed! If you have what you need $77 for the battery alone.

I’m sure you can do it, more so as you stated the system is on its second battery, I often find the replacement are much easier to replace than the original as Apple really glues them in.
