Can I get my phone out of retail mode?

I bought a phone off of an auction site. It stated that it was in retail mode in the specs but I thought it would be an easy fix. I thought wrong. Can anybody help me? I thought I was getting a good deal on a phone for my kid but now I'm stuck with a useless display phone
