PowerShot takes long time to turn on, says "memory card error"

My camera recently started taking a long time to turn on (talking like 30 seconds of holding the power button before the screen lights up). Once I turn it on, everything seems fine for a few seconds, but it eventually says "memory card error" and won't allow me to take any photos. I have tried replacing the memory card and the batteries, nothing seems to help.
