Ice maker Makes Ice sometimes

The ice maker on our Refrigerator only makes ice sometimes. Usually if we change the filter It will start making ice again but then within about a week it will stop making ice. We have also "fixed" it by turning off the ice maker using the system settings. We will turn it off for a few days and then turn it back on and it will start making ice again and then will last a couple days where we have a full ice tray and then it will stop making ice all together. My assumption is that the ice maker itself is still functional since we can still get ice made even if it is on a temporary basis. What else could be the issue
