Is it possible to retrieve my photos if my phone won’t power up

Hello, I’m just wondering how possible it would be to save the data and photos off of my iPhone 15, the phone died and apple have told me it won’t power up and the motherboard needs to be replaced however to save the data I could go to a third party shop.

My phone did a backup the day it died but it hasn’t saved everything in the back up so I have lost 2 weeks of holiday pictures in the build up to the phone breaking.

Just wondering if there’s any way to fix it or if there’s anyone out there who can solve it.

Thank you

@simmysingh68714 of course "apple have told me it won’t power up and the motherboard needs to be replaced" they do not repair logic boards. They want to get your money for a new board or even better, a new phone. There is no interest in fixing things to safe you money. I's not about you :-(

Anyhow, if your phone does not power up etc., even a third party shop can't get to your files. The same with any "software" If your board does not work, it can't be recovered.

Now, it's up to experts like @flannelist and @dadibrokeit to see if they can help you with this. IF anybody can, it's them!

Modern iPhones encrypt all data storage, so the old method of removing the memory chip and either reading it out directly or installing it on another motherboard is long gone. The only way to get your data back is to get the motherboard working again, a job that is frankly far beyond the capability of most of us home DIYers. There are, as @betatechlabs stated, data recovery services available who specialize in that sort of work. Probably the most well known of these is a company called iPad Rehab; the owner Jessa Jones is well known here on iFixit. Here's an article about her and her company.

Jessa Jones: What’s in Your Toolbox? - iFixit News

Head on over to her website; there's a link there specifically for Data Recovery, and that's what you want.

That being said, if you feel confident in your troubleshooting and microsoldering abilities and want to see what you can do yourself, Alisha ( @flannelist ) and myself would be glad to try and help, but we'll be under a handicap unless Alisha has a set of schematics and/or board files, because I don't. Also they may be able to suggest another site for data recovery, although I'm guessing iPad Rehab is going to be their choice as well. I have heard a lot about a company called REWA, but I don't know anything about how to contact them or what they would charge, although they seem to have a lot of technical expertise with regard to iPhones.

Good luck, and be sure to let us know what you decide and how it all turns out; I doubt you're the first or last person with this kind of problem, so others can benefit from your experience.

@dadibrokeit No schematics for the iPhone 15 series (or 14, or 13). But certainly doesn't mean it can't be fixed.

@simmysingh68714 There are a lot of factors in play when it comes to any device not powering on, and sadly, Apple here is in the business of getting you a working phone, not necessarily getting your data back. They also do not do much testing as far as repair goes for a no power device. If diagnostics say it won't power on, and they can't get it to power on, they usually don't even open up the phone or try any other parts. They offer a replacement device under the applicable level of coverage and call it fixed.

This could be as simple as a bad battery, or charge port, or any number of other components, it's not necessarily the board.

If you're repair savvy, you can order some parts yourself to see if you can get it to come on. But taking it to a third party shop you trust, is also reasonable since they may have parts on hand, or could troubleshoot the board if that's the issue.

Hi Simmy, I understand this is a frustrating situation, especially losing those irreplaceable vacation photos. Here are your options for recovering data from your iPhone 15:

1. Third-party data recovery services:

  • These services specialize in retrieving data from damaged devices. Success rates vary depending on the severity of the damage.
  • Research reputable data recovery services in your area and inquire about their experience with iPhone 15 data recovery specifically.
  • Be prepared for the possibility of data recovery being expensive.

2. Check your iCloud backup (if enabled):

  • Even if your most recent backup wasn't the day before your phone died, there might be an earlier backup that captured your vacation photos.
  • Go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage Storage. You can see how much space your backups are using and potentially which devices have backups.

3. Explore Photo Recovery Software (for Windows/Mac):

  • There's data recovery software designed specifically for iPhones. These can potentially recover deleted photos even if not included in a backup.
  • This option has a lower success rate compared to professional services, but it can be a more affordable gamble.

Unfortunately, fixing the motherboard itself most likely won't recover lost data.

Here are some additional things to consider:

  • If you take your phone to a third-party shop for data recovery, be sure to ask about data wiping practices. Some shops might erase all data during the recovery process.
  • In the future, consider enabling automatic iCloud backups daily or even hourly to minimize data loss.

I hope this information helps you recover your lost photos!

I agree with most of this, but would like to mention that fixing the board, would be the thing I would recommend most if that's actually the issue. Fixing the board would allow the phone to come back on, hopefully without any loss of data.

Of course its possible data could be lost, but in my experience a no power phones who logic board is repaired, usually come back up in the same state it was in when it last powered down. All the data intact.

@flannelist I meant having the board itself repaired.
