How do I adjust the speed of the cassette deck?

My cassettes are playing somewhat fast. No matter what cassette I play it always sounds a little bit fast.

Hi @lewisgallardo

Here's the section in the service manual¹ that shows how to perform electrical adjustments to the tape deck.

¹The manual linked above is for a Sony HCD-CP1 but this is the model name of the section in a CMT-CP1 that deals with the tape deck. See image below.

If your cassette deck is playing tapes too quickly, it's likely that the speed adjustment needs to be corrected. Here's how you can adjust the speed of your cassette deck:

1. Identify Speed Controls: Locate the speed adjustment controls on your cassette deck. These controls are usually accessible from the outside of the deck and may be labeled as "Speed," "Pitch," or "Tape Speed."

2. Consult the Manual: Refer to the user manual or documentation for your cassette deck to determine the correct procedure for adjusting the speed. The manual may provide specific instructions or recommend using a screwdriver to adjust the speed controls.

3. Access Internal Adjustment: In some cases, you may need to open the cassette deck to access internal speed adjustment pots or trimmers. If this is necessary, exercise caution and ensure the deck is unplugged and powered off before proceeding. Refer to the manual for guidance on accessing internal adjustments.

4. Play Test Tape: Insert a known-good test tape into the cassette deck and play it. Listen carefully to the playback and note if the speed is too fast or slow.

5. Adjust Speed Control: Use a small screwdriver or tool recommended by the manufacturer to adjust the speed control. Turn the control in small increments, either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on whether you need to increase or decrease the speed.

6. Monitor Playback: While adjusting the speed control, continue to monitor the playback of the test tape. Make small adjustments until the playback speed sounds correct. It may take several iterations to achieve the desired speed.

7. Verify with Different Tapes: Once you've adjusted the speed to your satisfaction, test playback with several different tapes to ensure consistency across recordings.

8. Finalize Adjustment: Once you're satisfied with the playback speed, carefully secure any access panels or covers that were removed during the adjustment process.

9. Regular Maintenance: Periodically check the playback speed of your cassette deck to ensure it remains consistent. Dust and debris buildup can affect speed over time, so cleaning the tape heads and mechanisms may be necessary for optimal performance.

If you're uncomfortable or unsure about adjusting the speed yourself, consider seeking assistance from a professional audio technician or contacting the manufacturer for support. Improper adjustment can potentially damage your cassette deck or result in incorrect playback speeds.

@marvine remember that when you use AI (ChatGPT etc) on here, you do want to state so in your Answer. Looking at and reading through your answer makes it highly likely that you are ;-)

I just did so myself, you need to access the insides by removing the side pannel, near the deck assembly next to the belts is a circular motor with a small black rubber on it, you need to use a small plastic screwdriver (using a metal one will make the potentiatometer speed up temporarly, it just makes adjusting it harder becasue you need to take the screwdriver out) and turn left for slower and right for faster until it sounds normal.
