The main thing to remember whenever working inside a laptop is to disconnect the battery from the motherboard as soon as it can be accessed after the laptop has been opened and before commencing any further work in the laptop. This is to minimize and prevent any possible electrical damage from occurring to the components in the laptop during the repair.

There is always power located somewhere on the motherboard, even when the laptop has been turned off. The laptop's power button is not a power isolating button. Its function is to signal the intentions of the user to the OS or the BIOS.

The only time that the battery should be connected to the motherboard when the laptop is open is if power is required on the board for testing or fault finding purposes.

Golden rule when repairing electronic devices: Power off first, on last i.e. disconnect the power from the board as soon as possible and only reconnect it last thing before finally closing the device for the last time after the repair has been completed.

Also wearing a wriststrap connected to a nearby earth point during the repair would minimize the chances of any ESD damage occurring to any sensitive electronic components that you may accidentally touch as well.
