Sony MHC-GN100D control buttons issue.

Hello.

For all that don't know, The model above is a music player from about 2005, and i am facing some issues with it.

I got it repaired a few years ago for fist time and then 1 year 6 months ago for the second time. The issue was that a few buttons did not work. The guy i gave it to repaired it. But now all the same buttons have gone bad AGAIN. And they have gone bad together, and hence i believe it's not the actual buttons, but some sort of component like a chip, or capacitors etc. The schematics for this machine are available online and i will be attaching those if they help. The guy charged a heck lot of money and hence i wanna repair it myself. I have prior experience opening and repairing electronics and hence i believe i can do it.

If someone can help me, almost everything on the game , video etc has gone bad. Is there a common link to those? WHat could i possibly check?
Everything relating to DVD does not work at all.

The remote functioned normally but now the remote has also died. The IR sensor does not show the purple light it used to. So its the remote and not the device's fault.

ALso, can the DVD player's lens be adjusted? Can someone help with that? I have seens various people make lenses more stronger with a potentiometer they turned on various consoles. Can the same be done for mine?

@windowsrage you got a lot going on there. You do have the service manual so ste one would be to disassemble the HCD-GN100D. Let's see what all of those components and circuit boards look like. this could be a single board failure as well as multiple boards. Since you have had issues with the button before, take pictures of that as well.

"make lenses more stronger with a potentiometer" that is not how it work. Tweaking the potentiometers will only work for a short while and is only being done on a laser that does not properly read the media. Doing it the wrong way or trying to much will burn the laser out. For now, that tweak will not do anything for your device.

You will also have to invest in a new multimeter. Nothing expensive or fancy but nevertheless, you will need one.

Okay. Where do I start with this repair?

I have disassembled it before.

Mainly,

It has a big main motherboard

A daughter board having most of the buttons

Another but very small board containing power,open close, disk buttons and a power supply consisting of various vaps and a huge transformer. I believe it is either a main board or the buttons board issue. What do I need multimeter for? Is it for continuity?

@windowsrage start by letting us see what you see. Post some pictures of your boards with the question. Once we see those we can refer to them and try to guide you further.

Okay so I opened it and have found 2 main problems/suspects

1. there seems to be a component which is square shaped, has 3 terminals, on one side there is one part and on the other 2 terminals. It has broken off from the board. If I tell you the component number could you help with the value and name?

2. 2 of the ribbon connectors have got their aluminium points coming off the flex.

Will upload pictures shortly. Right now is a busy time for me.
