DeLonghi ESAM 6900.M Prima Donna - No Power

Merry Christmas all.

I have a DeLonghi ESAM 6900.M Prima Donna and a few days ago, I tried turning it on but there was no power at all. Everything was dead.

I've scoured the net and it seems that the power control board are known to fail, and specifically the capacitors. The blown capacitors generally display obvious signs of failure, but I can't see any evidence of that on the power control board of mine. Any ideas what the issue could be, before I take a leap of faith and buy a new power board?

Thanks all.

Paul

Hi @paulmathias,

Do you have a DMM (digital multimeter)?

If so disconnect the power to the machine and use the DMM's Ohmmeter function to check if the Power On/Off switch is OK when it is operated i.e. continuity through the switch when it is operated.

If it is then please post an image showing where the wiring from the on/off switch connects to the Power board.

Looking at images of the power board online (yours don't show the full image) I can't see where the power connects to the board and also I can't see any input fuses or MOVs on the board either

I managed to fine a DMM, and dust it off.

I've taken a few photos and attached them to the original post.

1. is of the switch.

2. is of where the L and N connect to the board.

3. is a close-up of the L terminal (F5)

4. is a close-up of the N terminal (F4)

5. is across where I did the continuity test, with the main switch in the ON position - no beep.

It looks like the main switch is U/S. Is that likely?

Hi @paulmathias

Looking at images of the switch used in the model it looks like it is a double pole, single throw type i.e. two inputs and two outputs.

In your machine this means both the Active and the Neutral would be connected through by the switch being operated

With the power disconnected from the machine and with the DMM connected between one input terminal and the appropriate output terminal, when the switch is operated there should be a "beep" heard from the Ohmmeter. Then connect the Ohmmeter across the other input and output terminals to make sure that when operated they make as well i.e. beep heard.

Check that the beep works first by shorting the Ohmmeter test leads together. If for some reason the meter doesn't beep when its test leads are shorted together then the meter should measure 0.00 Ohms (meter set to Ohms x1 scale) when connected across either of the input/output connections with the switch operated

If not at all or if only on one input/output connection then the switch is faulty and will need to be replaced as both need to be working for power to reach the power board.

Search online for Delonghi ESAM 6900.M power switch, to find suppliers that suit you best.

Note: It may be just a mechanical fault in the switch i.e. broken or perhaps burnt out contacts, although hopefully not the latter as usually contacts shouldn't burn out so there may be something else that is wrong. I don't know the machine but can you turn off the machine first using the control panel controls and then turn off the power switch? If so if you always turned it off using only the power switch then this may be a contributing factor to the contacts burning out, but this is only a guess. You would have to open the switch first, to see what the problem is.

@jayeff That's right, the power switch maybe broken, try this first.

I just used the pins on the plug and the outputs from the switch and I have continuity. I flicked the switch to both on and off and both wires showed the switch to be working fine. I would have removed the switch, but it looks a real chore just to check if it works, and the plug pins definitely worked.

@paulmathias

You may have to follow what @vauweh suggests below as there's nothing obviously amiss that I can see in the images.

Thanks for the advice jayeff. Enjoy the rest of your holiday and have a happy new year.

@paulmathias

And to you.

Cheers from a West Aussie ;-)

The suspicious parts are in picture 2: The inductivity L2 and the switcher-IC LNK 356, there also should be a resistor, but I cannot see it. Compare to this guide. The parts are cheap, it's worth a try. If you live in Europe, the fix can be done by a special service station in Hamburg, Germany.

Everything I have read seems to point at this board as being a regular source of problems. I'm in Australia but I can get the board for around AUD65-75 (EUR 40-46, USD 45-55) which isn't too bad.

I just didn't realise a soldering iron would be involved!

Here it is: https://allappliances.com.au/delonghi-po...

Hi @vauweh, Here's a link I found that may help as there may be a link to the schematic for the board (scroll down to 2nd last post) although I'm not quite sure as my German is not that good, and also you have to be registered with the website, but perhaps maybe you already are

Cheers

Thank you, that's the schematics for an ECAM. I would actually buy the new circuit board, the price is acceptable. I am quite sure that it will work. Happy holidays!

さんによる

@vauweh the power board replacement guide that you posted above is also for an ECAM. Will it be similar for an ESAM6900?

I'll order the board right away, and I will keep you updated.

Happy New Year.

さんによる

No, the boards are totally different. The parts belong to the power unit, which is - "mas o menos" - similar on all DeLonghi boards. The parts are cheap, about 5€, but your soldering skills have to be rather good, they use SMD parts. As I said: replace it with a new one.
