Speakers humming when plugged to the power

Hello! As mentioned I have plugged this speakers to the pc/outlet and as soon as I plug them i hear constant hum, I have identical problem with old speakers right know as i have set of speakers, One mentioned in post, other ones are pretty old and wouldn't be suprised if they are just old (however there was no problem previously.

Right now I checked few extension cord, any wireless devices around, tried to slightly bend cables to check for any damages with wires, unplugged everything excluding speakers still hear humming sound. If there is something i can check inside of the speakers I can do it, well, I've got lot of tools so I hope I will be able to repair them myself

EDIT

That’s how circuit board looks like

Hi @malutkisiw47949,

Might not be a speaker problem.

It could be that there's a problem with the audio output from the PC.

Have you tried using headphones with a 3.5mm stereo audio plug and plugging that into the audio out port of the PC?

Can you try using a different USB power supply (phone charger with USB socket that you can plug the speaker cable into perhaps?) just to prove whether it is the power supply form the PC, or in the speaker that is the problem

If it is determined that it is the PC and not the speakers, then what is the make and model number of the PC or motherboard if a custom build?

Hi @malutkisiw47949

No worries.

Thanks for the images

Here's an image taken from your images where I've highlighted the faulty capacitor you mentioned that looks like it needs to be replaced but maybe also check the others ones behind as well as I couldn't see them clearly.

Also there appears to be a dry solder joint on the solder side of the board that needs to be resoldered so that it makes a good electrical connection.

Thank You for fast reply! As I checked there is no issue with other headphones, and plugging through any other phone charger or usb hub makes same problem. Even when speakers are not plugged to any audio source the humming does not stop. Maybe it is good to mention that i've also checked the outlet if it is properly grounded. Using same extension cord to power PC and the speakers

@malutkisiw47949,

Not sure what you mean by "Using same extension cord to power PC and the speakers"? Looking online at the speaker, they are powered by 5V DC from a USB cable and not by an AC supply which would power a PC unless your PC is powered by 5V DC also?

Seems as though there's a ground hum in the power supply section of the board in the speaker.

Maybe check for faulty capacitors as they are used to prevent any noise going through the audio amp on the board.

@jayeff

One of my extension cord has 2xUSB slots, but usually I do use phone charger as a way to power the speakers so I've tried to use different extension cord and same issue. Okay I will try to take them apart to check the capacitors and maybe loose soldering or something like that

@jayeff

You are right! Capacitor 2200uf is pretty inflated on one of the speakers, my biggest problem is that on the capacitor is weird orange „amber” that I don’t know how to take care of.

But I hope that after replacing capacitors will be better! Thank you so much! I am not sure if I should close this post in case it won’t help, because I dont want to create another one later hah 😅 as right know I need to figure out how to get rid of this amber. Looks like melted sugar and I will have to take of this later as right know my arm is in pain and plaster.

Anyways Again, thank You so much for assistance!

Hopefully it is the cause of the problem.

If it doesn't just link my user name as you have in the comment above and I will be notified when I go online after you have done that.

Also perhaps post some close up images of the board in your question at the top of this page, as perhaps something can be spotted that you may have missed. Show both sides.

Here's how to do this on ifixit iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法

Cheers
