Trying to replace the Blade SSD

Hey guys,

Have an iMac 21.5 (early 2017). Unfortunately, the built-in pci-SSD broke. have now ordered and installed an owc Auro Pro X2. Everything according to iFixit instructions. Has everything worked perfectly until then. Unfortunately the utility does not recognize the new SSD as a target volume. What can I do? Does this have to do with the firmware from apple?

Before the defect macOS 10.13 (high sierra) was installed. So according to notes from OWC current enough to install the new SSD for the host computer to recognize it.

Thanks a lot

Manu

Hey guys,

You’ll need to create a bootable USB thumb drive using another Mac system. The issue you are facing is do to Apple upgrading the file system from HFS+ to APFS and to add to that Apple also altered the OS’s PCIe/NVMe driver between Sierra and High Sierra which is why the OWC drive won’t show up.

Here’s how to get the OS installers How to download and install macOS

And here’s the steps to convert it to be bootable once you copy it over to a GUID formatted USB thumb drive Create a bootable installer for macOS

Hi Manu,

Dan must be right. Your MBP is probably the last model to have a removable SSD. In my recent experience, this SSD can be moved around between Mid- 2013 MBAs and Mid- 2015 MBPs. I've moved 3 of them in the last couple of months.
And recovered their data using Carbon Copy Cloner. Al 3 were Apple originals.
APFS must be your issue!
Try and start up from your Recovery partition ( command R at startup), open Disk utility and see if you can format/ partition your SSD as APFS.

@bartvsndessel - To clarify this is an iMac system.

I should have clarified the reason the macOS version is even an issue has to do with what version Apple gives you via Internet recovery. Which is the older Sierra release.

All older Mac systems face this issue as Apple failed to consider people using a SSD blade drive over the spinning Iron SATA HDD or even SSD.

If EM had a dual drive setup then upgrading the SATA drives OS to something newer than Sierra would also work then using Disk Utility to setup the blade drive, then to finish things alter the startup disk setting to the blade drive if that is the end goal.
