Does a dead motherboard impact charging and battery health?

Newby repairer question here:

My friend recently gave me his Galaxy A13 that according to him just stopped working one day. With about 50% battery the screen simply went black and it hasn't powered on since.

I connected a charger and could see that it was drawing and holding charge, I suspect this is probably due to a dead motherboard. But it got my wondering, whilst I'm aware they're totally separate components, would a dead motherboard have any impact on a phone drawing or holding charge?

UPDATE @oldturkey03 These are the best I could do. Everything looks fine to my untrained eye. Hoping you can shed some light on the situation. Also apologies for the delay have been on holiday

@jsf11 yes to the drawing of any amps no to holding a charge. You motherboard gets the battery state of charge through the “gas gauge” and the power management then determines the charge/don't charge. I would start with a new battery and measure the voltage on the battery connector with the charger connected. You should get something around 4-4.2V

There is a possibility that this is caused by an issue with the charging board as well as the flex that connects it to the mainboard. Check those carefully.

Remember that your battery may charge and even hold a charge but may break down under a load.

@jsf11 just in case you need some extra guidance and if you do not have this already A13 Troubleshooting

Thanks for your informative post @oldturkey03 much appreciated info!

UPDATE: So after a LONG charge I'm now getting feedback when inserting and removing the charger. The screen remains black but the vibration leads me to think this may be an issue to do with the LCD or the LCD Flex. Will do some further investigation.

@jsf11 that is good news. If you do have it open or if you have to replace the LCD, replace the battery as well. That way you only have to open it once.

Thanks for all your help and advice, the troubleshooting guide is very useful!

All seemed to be going well, I managed to replace the screen and battery without issue. Except the phone won't power on...

The screen flashes for a split second then goes off. If you hold the power button it just does this on a loop. I'm at a bit of a loss.

@jsf11 did you by any chance also replace the charging board? did you measure the voltage as I indicated on my answer?
