How can I buff out light scratches from the outside screen?

Someone gave me this calculator for my daughter. I was cleaning it and I really should have researched first but I didn’t. I used a Q-tip dipped in alcohol and rubbed all over including the screen. I didn’t notice if these scratches were already there or if I caused them but I would love to get them out. I don’t think they’re actual scratches because there’s no feel to them. They look more like when you take your finger nail and run it across the screen it leaves a light mark. I tried toothpaste but that didn’t work.

The TI-84 Plus CE has a piece of clear plastic in front of the LCD so the LCD is very unlikely to be damaged. They most likely are attempting to clean the plastic screen protector. :)

The screen protector will get microscratches on its own from just being inside a bag with any dirt. Also, there will be unavoidable 1 cm long vertical marks on both sides of the screen where the slide case rubs. I highly doubt the qtip caused any noticeable scratches. Unfortunately I don't have any tips on how to repair them.

Unfortunately, neither replacement LCDs nor screen protectors are sold separately. They have to be salvaged from a donor calculator.

Can that piece of plastic be peeled off?

To be clear it's not a plastic film so it can't be peeled off, the screen protector is a 2mm thick plastic sheet.

You can remove it if you have a strong suction cup. The glue isn't super strong and will eventually loosen enough over the years to allow dust under the screen protector. These calculators are designed to stay working, not to stay pristine.

I would be extremely careful if taking the screen protector off. Everyone I know who has done it (including me) has accidentally smeared glue on the inside of the screen protector. Smeared glue is significantly worse than any scratch.

Yikes, I will just deal with the lines. Thank you so much for your input. It’s very helpful. I’m about to post a question on a sister calculator so maybe you can help me with that as well!

@joanofark

You could try using baking soda.

A baking soda paste can be used to buff out slightly deeper scratches that don't disappear with the use of toothpaste.

Just be gentle in application and definitely not too much or too wet

@joanofark since you have already tried to use a mild abrasive (toothpaste) to eliminate those scratches without success, I think you have exhausted what you can do already. It is possible that these are pressure marks on the LCD. I would suggest to either learn to live with it, or consider replacing the display. That would be a costly thing to do for something that sounds purely cosmetic. I'd say enjoy the functions of the calculator and consider those "scratches" battlemarks of numerical battles.
