How do I fix a defective PC screen, plus cost to repair?

After wiping down the screen the display began to flicker, now there are lines on the screen and the brightness is dim. Does the LCD need replacing and how much is the repair price?

Hi Maddie,

Since the whole point of this site is to enable you to do your own repairs, the cost of the repair is going to be whatever you end up paying for the parts and tools you need to do the job.

By far the best way to find an exact replacement is to open up the display and look for a model number and manufacturer of the LCD itself. It's rare that a laptop manufacturer actually makes its own screens, so chances are you can find the same screen that's used for multiple models of computers.

Barring that, a search for your specific model of computer still turned up a wide selection of LCDs that should work, but you may need to know if there's a variant in particular you need. Some of the options include things like whether it's a touch screen or not, if it's a matte or glossy finish and possibly the resolution of the screen, usually referred to as something like HD vs. FHD.

Prices I saw ranged from about $25 USD for a used screen up to an average price of around $50 for new parts. Here's an example from Amazon of one that should work.

Amazon.com: LCDOLED® Replacement for Lenovo IdeaPad 1-14IGL05 1-14ADA05 82GW 81VU 14.0 inches FullHD 1920x1080 IPS LED LCD Display Screen Panel : Electronics

From the one video I was able to find it looks like removing the LCD is pretty straight-forward and very similar to other laptops. It seems obvious the person who created the video is making it up as they go along, but the basics are:

  1. With the laptop closed, remove the hinge cover
  2. Use a pry tool to remove the bezel. It looks like there may be about three screws holding it on along the bottom.
  3. Using the pry tool, disengage the glue holding the top of the screen.
  4. Fold the screen down onto the keyboard to access the connector.
  5. Unplug the connector.

As far as tools, a metal prying tool and a screwdriver look like about all you need. You might also need some double-sided adhesive for holding the replacement screen in place; most people recommend some stuff called Tesa Tape; you can buy that in varying widths right here in the iFixit Store.

The iSesamo opening tool is one of my favorites; you can get that here tool

Hopefully that'll get you going! If you have any questions feel free to ask. Let us know how your repair goes.

Update (08/31/23)

Sorry, it occured to me that I didn't really answer your question about whether your screen needs to be replaced or not.

Generally liquids and LCDs don't mix well, so it's entirely possible if not likely that a little too much liquid got into the circuitry of the screen and has caused damage.

If you have the time it might be worth your while to give it some time to dry out on its own or you can try and accelerate that process by using a hair dryer along the bottom edge where the liquid is most likely to have caused problems. I would expect some improvement after a couple of days if it's going to; it may be minor but if it does improve even a little then the chances are you may see more improvement over a longer time.

Given your description of what it's doing, it doesn't sound hopeful to be honest. If you want to add some pictures of the screen and how it looks that may help us figure out for sure whether you're going to need to replace it or not.

Hi @maddie14836

Here's the hardware maintenance manual taken from this support webpage for the laptop.

Go to p.48 Remove the LCD panel section to view the procedure to remove the LCD panel.

There are 11 different LCD panels that can be used in this laptop e.g. HD no touch, HD touch, FHD no touch, FHD touch etc. See Notes: below

Here's the parts list for the laptop that will help.

Click on Select Commodity > LCD Panels (11) to find the part numbers for all the different LCD panels available. Usually the part number can be found on the back of the LCD panel itself (once you have removed it) if you wish to verify that you're ordering the same one.

Search online using the LCD part number only applicable to what you need to find suppliers that suit you best.

Notes :

HD= high definition 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution,

FHD = full high definition 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution.

No touch = no LCD touchscreen function

Touch = LCD touchscreen function

Unless specified whether it has touch or no touch capability it may also be shown in the part description as simply HD = no touch or HDT = HD + touchscreen and FHD = no touch or FHDT = FHD + touchscreen
