How much power does the ssd use?

i upgraded to a western digital sn740 and it constantly gets too hot and eats battery. I see ifixit has a micron ssd but it says for steam deck. would that run any cooler/better battery?

According to the Western Digital data sheet for your SSD, the amount of power it uses depends on the size of the drive; 256 and 512 GB drives are rated at 50 mW and the 1 and 2 TB drives are both rated at 65 mW of power used.

Product Brief: Western Digital PC SN740 NVMe™ SSD

However, when you go pull up the data sheets for the Micron SSD's being sold by iFixit for the Steam Deck, you get a much different story.

Micron 2400 NVMe PCIe Gen4 2230

Micron 2400 SSD With NVMe Product Brief

According to them, all three of their drives, 512 GB, and 1 and 2 TB, are rated at "<200 mW" of power. That's saying that on average, the Micron drives are going to pull four times as much power as the WD drives.

So no, there's no point in going to the Micron SSD if it's power savings you're looking for; you'd be going in exactly the wrong direction.

Few details i forgot.

1) device is rog ally with 40 Watt-hour battery (same as the steam deck)

2) the ally came with a micron 512gb drive.

3)my sn740 was the 2tb.

im not 100% sure if uses more battery, i was just going off having to charge back to 80% three times while downloading my games off steam.

my biggest reason to not use the sn740 is the temperature. if i was plugged in and downloading it would hit 85+ according to S.M.A.R.T.

if the old 512gb drive used 4x as much power, then theres no reason my new drive should be hotter right?

@greel I don't know about your original drive; I didn't look that up as I didn't find a simple pointer to what the make and model was; the one I referenced was the SSD being sold by iFixit; I don't know if it's the same or not.

original drive is micron 2400 (same as ifixit) but in 512gb capacity. it is what Asus shipped in my device.

Some M.2 drives tend to use more power and get hotter than others, making them quite unsuitable for laptops.

I've had to swap out a crucial mx500 for a Samsung 860 Evo because the crucial was killing the battery life on my laptop.

When possible, the original M.2 is preferred since it's most likely optimized by the manufacturer to fit their battery life claims.
