How to record neighbor's bass clearly

Neighbor is an a**hole, harassed my family for years.

His car pulls into garage direct under my apt, bass pounding. One time bass hit so hard my chair (dining chair) literally bounced around a little with me sitting on it while I was working (accounting, work at home).

Need proof for landlord. Already sent detailed letters documenting years of this crap. He wants more proof.

If it's not a good camera, can you recommend a microphone to capture neighbor's bass exactly as loud and as hard as it hits? Playback's always muffled. Don't know if it'd hold in court if I have to figure out how to adjust the recording to playback as loud as I hear it.

Edit: I know it's an old camera, but it starts recording faster than my phone.

This may be a bit silly, but you could try a seismograph.

Bass is such a low frequency that it has a physical impact, such as bouncing you and your chair around.

If you get a seismograph, and have it recording when neighbor comes home, it can paint a very real and clear picture of the amount of physical movement that his bass is causing. A few calculations could then be used to prove the volume that it is producing in your home. http://eqseis.geosc.psu.edu/cammon/HTML/...

Even if you do not want to buy (or cannot afford) a professional seismograph, it is fairly cheap and simple process to make one. This is a dedicated project resource for exactly that purpose: https://raspberryshake.org/ (though you can find many other resources for other ways and things to use to make one).

You can program it to record along with the date and time. A clearly documented recording that the house is stable for hours, then neighbor comes home and shakey-shakey. I think a few weeks would be more than enough to document conclusively the affect that his bass is having.

Additionally, there is ample research and many studies on the affect that seismic activity has on construction and architecture. If you do not live in an earthquake-prone area, your home is probably not built to withstand such things. Meaning landlord's case would be improved as he could have an inspector likely document structural damages, especially if located in/around the garage area where the car comes, as a result of the negligent behavior.

@finishhim There are also seismometer apps available on both the iOS and Android app stores, though they aren't as sensitive as actual proper seismometers are. If the bass is enough to shake your chair though, it they should suffice.

@oldturkey03 Sadly, I can’t actually log in to Meta. It just kicks back a 400 error every time I try to post, reply, or log in.

@shingle let's see if the Bürgermeisterin (Global Head of Community) @amber and our awesome Community Manager @krisrodriguez can help you out with that.

@shingle, let's get this sorted out. I just sent you an email.

@maulwurfente Absolutely true. I guess that wasn't my first instinct to recommend because the time frame involved may mean OP would want to leave the thing at home recording all day, to prove the time frames line up and that they aren't just picking and choosing what to record and what to ignore. In that scenario, they wouldn't want to just leave their cell phone sitting there all day for a couple weeks, but if they have an extra similar device that could certainly work.

Hi @finishhim

It may be better to provide more scientific evidence of the volume level as just listening to it may be too subjective.

That way there's no guess work as to the volume level being heard by you

Try using the camera or even a mobile phone to video record the level of the sound volume shown on the display of a decibel meter (examples only) when the noise is heard.

With a phone you will also get the sound (maybe will not reproduce as loud) but coupled with the video of the meter's display it will show the level of the sound at the time.

If it is near, equal or past the maximum level that can be shown then that is definitely harmful.

Here's a link that gives an idea of what the dB levels mean as far as affecting humans.

Thanks for answering. I understand that dbs don't measure bass accurately. Like when a boomcar's at an intersection a block away. You don't hear the music as much as hear and feel the bass slamming into your house.

My playback is muffled with static? White noise? I think I need better equipment or a way to adjust the settings so it plays back exactly as loud as it really is, not like it's buried under thick blankets and plastic shopping bags.

@finishhim

Unfortunately it is only the more expensive SPL meters that incorporate a 1/1 and/or 1/3 octave band filter which allow you to measure the low bass frequencies.

Most cheaper SPLs measure in the range 20Hz to 20KHz which does cover the bass frequencies but then use an algorithm to give an overall result.

In my opinion it may be still worthwhile trying one of the cheaper ones. if the bass frequency is louder than the rest, may show up as 'spikes" on the meter, in time with the actual bass pulses being felt. So you may still get an idea of the bass volume. Just recording sound wouldn't indicate the vibrations of the bass that are being felt and videoing the effects could be put down to a problem with the camera or the user.

If these had definitions like "enough force to move x weight y distance" or "force equal to vending machine falling down stairs" or "trapped inside dumpster with a burning box of M80s," I'd probably get those pricier ones right off the bat.

I'm still looking through reviews.

He's a known liar, besides. Whole family's like that, making up things to avoid any responsibility for the crap they've pulled or even to try to get me in trouble and physically intimidate me. Landlord's well aware of that.

@finishhim just as a general comment, this is not repair related. I feel your pain. Having had "interesting" neighbors in my lifetime as well, I know how it feels. Here is my concern. The extent to which you want to go too, in order to prove to the landlord about what is going on, has me more concerned than your neighbor. If this has been going on for years, I would expect the landlord to at least have heard about this before. Your landlord wants more prove but it seems, does not want to deal with it. If you and the neighbor are the only tenants, I would find that very conspicuous. I would even reconsider my living arrangements. Why put up with that to this extend over this long period? BTW, have you ever spoken to the neighbor about this? Ever brought this up directly? There are certain civil laws as well as renter agreements that should be used as well. I suggest you find out about this for your region and talk to somebody in the legal department about that.

Do not let the hate rule this World or your live.

I think all the answers on here are extremely smart, good and could be implemented.

@oldturkey03 Yeah, I'm sorry. I get this isn't really a repair question. I was hoping for tips on tweaking the equipment I already have.

He knows. He was a minor for much of this, so I tried talking to his mom repeatedly. Just being a civil adult, no snark, threats, or childish retaliation from me. She'd lie through her teeth, then openly encourage him to continue or even join in.

Last time I went looking for her to have another talk -- literally just asking politely if she were there-- he suddenly came at me screaming and getting in my face. Probably thought he'd scare me into skipping town or goad me into hitting him so he'd call the cops on me. Didn't work.

Then his mom's claiming to the landlord that I stormed the other unit, ready for a throwdown. Bull. They're both much larger and heavier than me, why would I try to start a brawl?

There are several units, same landlord. They either aren't here when he acts up, or don't want to get involved. I've been looking, but market rate rent is nuts.

Depending on where you live, you can file a noise complaint with the police, especially if other tenants can corroborate your story. Also, how are you people coming up with such good answers 😭

Thanks, I've tried the cops, too. I wish they'd start fining them.

how about you just deal with it and let it go? It sounds like you are just aggravating the situation. A few second of hearing a persons stereo is not going to cause deftness I assure you.

You keep recording, and telling on folks, that is guaranteed to cause you harm. My suggestion, ditch the snitch equipment, and invest in a stereo system with couple of 18 inch speakers. Hell, you might enjoy it. People need to stop being so negative. There is a silver lining to all situations. You just have to be positive enough to find that silver lining. Aslo, if you can’t find another place to live, how do you think things are going to be for them if you get them kicked out. I bet if you show them how it is affecting you, they will be more considerate. If you must snitch and feel thats your only option, just record with sound, the area of your home most affected. If it’s bouncing your chair surely it goes to knock your family heirloom ( that you bought at the flea market yesterday) off and break it. Or it’s going to rattle pictures or something. Just make sure time and dates are being recorded.

Snitches already have their hands dirty when they rat each other out for a lighter sentence. The worst I've done is politely and repeatedly talk to them, then call the cops for a noise complaint and talk to the landlord because they won't stop this crap.

They deliberately harass my family, they deserve to be punished. That includes getting kicked out. They want to spew that much $@$*, then they shouldn't be surprised they splash themselves.

No. Some people absolutely deserve to face the consequences of their actions. Especially when children and pets are involved. Not everyone wants to hear what you consider 'music' anyway. Keep it down to a respectable level and I'll leave you alone. Simple.
