Why will my 2DS register my original SD card but not a new one

So, when i bought my 2DS i used a 4GB SD card with it from 2014 to present day. i decided enough is enough and bought a 16GB SD Card to replace the 4GB one. My 2DS will register the 4GB SD Card and read it normally but it tells me that the new 16GB one is Write-Protected. I have checked into this using my computer but it seems to not be Write-Protected because i can Copy & Paste the files from my 4GB SD to the 16GB SD with no troubles at all. Please help me

Ensure that your SD card (It should be and SDHC for capacities above 4GB up to 32GB for compatibility) does not have its slide tab on the wrong setting. If that's not the issue, it may be a formatting issue. Nintendo recommends using the SD Association's SD Memory Card Formatter for SD cards to be used with the 3DS product series. The software can be found here. Nintendo also mentions that you should select Overwrite format when formatting the card. Give it a shot.

If that more conventional solution does not work, there are some who solve this kind of problem by taping over the slide tab, which apparently prevents the SD card from being unintentionally locked when inserted. If this doesn't work, it's worth noting that there's a small mechanism in the card slot that determines whether or not the card inserted is write protected or not that may be bent out of place, thus resulting in the console itself seeing any card inserted as being that way. The fix for that is detailed here in another user's answer to a similar issue. In your case, you mention that the 4GB card is still read normally, so this may not be relevant to your issue, or your new card may have some slight variances in tolerancing if the solution is relevant.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: This is a link to another formatter that I've found recommended. This is a link to the third answer that I mention in my comment response below. Please check the iFixit link in my initial answer again, as I previously only linked to the question as opposed to the relevant solution involving the mechanism of the card reader.

i attempted all of the ideas you have given here and none have stopped the 2DS from saying the SD is Write-Protected. i tried the 4GB again after turning it off and all my files from it arrived without any troubles. is there anything else you can recommend to try to fix this problem?

@zachariahs59303 It's strange. The fact that your regular card is working just fine and the new one doesn't makes it seem as though it isn't an issue with your 2DS. If you've confirmed the mechanism in the card slot is fine, the new SD card has been properly formatted and works on your PC, and the the tape trick also doesn't work, it seems that all conventional avenues have been expended. Are you sure you did the tape method with the slide tab in the correct position? Is the format of the card FAT32?

I'm not sure, but if none of this works, it may be a compatibility issue with the particular card that you're using somehow. It's not the first choice, but I'd suggest getting your hands on another card of a similar capacity to verify if possible.

i have formatted the card to Fat32 multiple times, the SD Card is from the brand Verbatim. The tape trick hasnt worked. im very confused seeing as my old SD works no problems but my brand new one is having issues

@zachariahs59303 The functionality of your old card especially is what makes me feel your new one may actually have an issue. Getting access to another SDHC card of similar capacity -perhaps from another device somewhere in the house- backing up its data, and using it as a test case would be my next course of action if possible. If it works, I'd either return the card that doesn't work with your 3DS and get another one or perhaps swap cards with the other device if it works on that hardware.

i have just tried it with a 64gb Samsung SD Card formatted in the same way as i formatted the 16GB one. still doing the same thing. and the 4GB is still working no problem, i feel as though i should make a stop at a tech repair company to see if they can have a look inside the console. i could be risking the entire console as it is very old but its well looked after so i should be okay right?
