Why is the power button switching colors?

Model: Alienware M15 R3

Service Manual: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-...

Issue: When I press the power button, it lights up in different colors and shuffling through them until I press and hold the power button again for about 8 seconds to turn it off. The fans do not turn on and the display doesn't show up. I also tried an external monitor, with same results. I've reseated the battery, SSD (x2) and same issue. I’ve tried this with the charger plugged in, with and without the battery installed, but same issue. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @jayhernandez

Does it do this with the charger connected, you didn't say?

Try a full power refresh in case it is a corrupted BIOS and check if that resolves the problem.

I realize that you said that you said “…I've reseated the battery,” but sometimes it is necessary to also remove the RTC battery (Real Time Clock) from the motherboard as well to reset the BIOS back to its default state.

Here’s the procedure:

a). Disconnect the charger from the laptop if connected.

b). Disconnect the main battery from the motherboard.

c). Disconnect the RTC coin cell battery from the motherboard.

Here’s the service manual for the laptop as linked by you. Go to p.46 & p.47 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the RTC battery and the main battery respectively.

When the RTC battery is removed measure its voltage. If it is <2.6V DC replace it. Search online for Alienware 15 R3 cmos battery, to find suppliers of the part. (cmos battery = RTC battery)

d). Press and hold the laptop's Power button for a full 30 seconds and then release it

e.) Reconnect the RTC battery (or its replacement) and the main battery.

f). Reverse the above to re-assemble the laptop.

g.) When the laptop is completely re-assembled, connect the charger and try to turn on the laptop.

If it starts OK there may be a message about the date and time being incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been completely reset back to its default settings. Once the date and time have been adjusted the message won’t appear the next time that the laptop is started.

If you had previously changed any user defined settings in BIOS to suit whatever specific hardware configuration that you had for the laptop, then these will have to be set again.

The model shown in the service manual looks nothing like the one I have. The CMOS battery isn’t easily accessible so I would need to completely remove all parts to even see if it’s underneath the motherboard as it’s not seen from the top when the case cover is removed.

@jayhernandez

The manual doesn't say to remove the systemboard as it does in some other laptops so it shouldn't be underneath. The image in the manual shows it near the left side fan

What is the model number shown on the product label on the bottom of your laptop?

Here's a link that shows other ways to find it.

This is just to confirm the model number

If the manual looks different to what you have then something's not right.

@jayhernandez

Found an M15 R3 manual

It doesn't have a separate cmos battery.

This manual is dated 2021 and is model number P87f whereas the one you linked in dated 2016 and is model number P69F

I think you linked an Alienware 15 R3 and not an Alienware M15 R3 as stated in your question. Easy mistake, we both missed it ;-)

Try doing the power refresh by disconnecting the main battery as the cmos battery is part of the main battery i.e. RTC (cmos) voltage is supplied by it and not a separate coin cell battery.

Thank you, I have the laptop at home, so I can’t get the device information currrntly. I did remove the battery, hold down the power button for 30 seconds and then plugged in only the charger. I did the same thing, but installed the battery, but same issue. I don’t have a voltage tester to check it the DC Jack is recording the power or any other spot on the motherboard. I just get rainbow lights. I was trying to upload the video.

@jayhernandez

The power light is blinking an error code

Check what pattern is showing to find what the error code and problem may be.
