Piece and spring fell out of filter holder

I mistakenly put fresh coffee grounds in the holder without filter. When installing the filter holder basket back into the machine after cleaning, a "mushroom" piece and spring fell out of the machine. I assume this controls the flow of brewed coffee into the carafe. I tried to figure out how to reassemble, to no avail. Please help!

This is the "brew pause" valve. On the models I have had it is normally held in place by a soft washer on the top of the plastic "mushroom" (at left in first picture). The second picture shows it in place. The washer is black in one cone I have, and white in another. You can probably order a replacement filter basket.

Great pictures, @caryg!

@christinel23302, if I might add, from the second picture if you zoom in on it, it appears there's a metal screw holding the white keeper onto the shaft of the mushroom. I'm guessing that screw worked its way out after a number of years and is now mixed in with the grounds you probably threw away.

Anyway, the spring goes over the mushroom and the two pieces together get inserted into the bottom of the filter holder. Then the white piece (white in the second picture, black in the first) goes inside the filter holder and is supposed to be held on with a screw. Assuming the screw has vanished into that great recycling bin in the sky, I see no reason that screw is particularly special; it may be zinc coated as protection against corrosion, but I would imagine any zinc or stainless steel screw that fits the hole would work as a replacement. Your local hardware store should have something suitable for under a buck.

There is no screw; the disassembled picture shows all pieces of a working filter cone. The washer is stretchy and pushes over the tip of the plunger (concave side up, as it needs to have the flat side down in order to properly seal). My assumption is that @christinel23302 dislodged and lost the washer when cleaning out the grounds.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. So it looks like Christine has lost the inside washer that holds the stopper onto the basket. Hmm, what to use as a substitute? I have a small plastic container full of plumbing washers that probably has something that would work, so that might be a place to start. A stiff rubber washer with a center hold the right size and an outside diameter that will fit down into the basket would be what you'd need.
