Black Screen weeks after screen replacement

I dropped lots weight on my phone one day while lifting. The phone still worked, so I replaced the screen. It worked for a while, though the screen would freeze when I tried to put in my password (if I clicked the on/off button once then the touch screen would respond again). Then, after a few weeks, I dropped my phone from about five feet. The screen was on for a few seconds, though the music album art (from what I was listening to) was greyed out. Then, the screen went black and my headphones disconnected. The phone felt hot for about an hour. I figured it was a loose connection, so I opened the phone up and reconnected everything. My screen will still not turn on. I am suspecting the battery may be out because the phone was hot, but the battery is not bulging. I can not find anything about how to test the battery. Thoughts?

I have ordered a new phone, but I need to fix this one because I forgot to back it up after I fixed it the first time. Any help would be much appreciated.

hello carl,

It is very difficult to predict the state of the device based on this few pieces of information. All indications are that restoring the touch and display functions will keep this phone alive long enough to make a backup. However, this does not always have to be the case. Sometimes there are much more problems with data stability - which in your case is confirmed by previous problems with entering the PIN code. Damage to the decryptor function can sometimes be deeper and more difficult to repair, thus more expensive. I will advise you to find a good repair shop and order a motherboard diagnostic service. On this basis, you will be able to know the costs and possibilities of such an operation. Without it, it's just fortune-telling.

On the other hand, check the content of your iCloud account on the Apple's website. You may have had auto-backup turned on. In this case, you can judge for yourself whether you need to run a damaged phone

I wish you luck. Data loss is often hard unacceptable.

Thank you for your reply.

Is there a way I can test for the decryptor function? I can find no information online about it. Or test the battery?

I have already removed and reinstalled the screen, to no avail.

From everything I have read and seen, it looks like the issue is a short somewhere on my logicboard. Can iphone logic boards be reflowed in the oven like computer logic boards?

@carlv13011 There are a few IC’s on the iPhone 8 series that have under-fill, if you put the whole logic board into an oven it will cause more damage. If your phone was still getting hot after switching off it would point to a short on the main power rail. The shorted capacitor should be easy to track down by a competent repairer using visual, thermal cam or even freeze spray. The capacitor would just need removing to relieve the short.

decryptor is a logical function and cannot be tested other than by running and logging into the device. This function is the cooperation of several physical elements: processor, memory, baseband, data disk, etc. Together, they constitute a data encryption mechanism. You can read about it online, so I won't bother you with the details (secure element and secure enclave).

@Chris Stables gives good advice, listen to him. An oven is not a good idea, and data recovery work is a one-way roller coaster ride. There is usually only one chance to recover your data, if you miss it your data can be lost. That's why I suggest the first thing. Find a good repair shop and order diagnostics, you will know how to proceed.

Use a multimeter to test the battery: set the V-flat, red probe to +. If you have any reading, even 0V batteries can be salvaged.

I hope I helped :)
