Whirlpool Gold WDF750SAYM unique issue

My issue is related to Whirlpool gold WDF750SAYM. A couple of weeks ago, the dishwasher would go through the complete cycle, however, when I opened the door and checked, the dishes were dirty and I could tell the water was not pumped or sprayed through the arms.

I reset the breaker and then tried a cycle and this time, the dishes were washed(water circulated) however, they were not dry and the drying cycle did not work. The next time, I noticed the dishes were washed and the heat cycle kicked in and then there was water at the bottom of the dishwasher and it did not drain.

To troubleshoot, I disconnected the dishwasher and tested the thermostat with a multimeter it had connectivity but I still replaced it since it had purchased it. There was also connectivity at the heating coil. I replaced the turbidity sensor as well.

After replacing the above parts, I ran a diagnostic cycle and it came back at 8-1 which appears to be drain pump related however when I push the cancel button, it immediately drains out the excess water from the dishwasher.

I then reset the breaker and ran the diagnostic cycle again and got the same error 8-1 however the complete diagnostic cycle ran and there was water circulating, heat, and then water was drained. I was unable to clear out the error codes and do not know how to clear out the codes.

This time I loaded the dishes again and the dishwasher filled with water but did not recirculate through the spray arms.

I ran another cycle however put it in sensor mode and the complete cycle ran this time however it took 7 hours.

I am so confused as to what the problem is. The pump motor is working, the drain pump is working, the heating coil is working, the thermostat is working, the turbidity sensor is new. The float switch also appears to be working. I am thinking this may be the control board issue.

Help please on the next steps or what the issue might be.

Thanks,

Hi @ashwin04

It still could be the drain pump, a fractured or slipping impeller perhaps. Unplug the dishwasher and remove the drain pump and see if there's some uneven grabbing feeling (best that I can describe what it feels like) when you turn the impeller. If not then it may be faulty or slipping and the drain pump needs to be replaced.

Also have you checked that there's no obstruction from the check valve to the drain pipe (under the sink), you never said?

Hi @ashwin04

You may have to go back over and check your work in case you disturbed something ;-)

Here are all the possible causes for a 6-4 error code.

Thank you @jayeff. I have not looked at the check valve to the drain as the water seems to be draining properly when I look at the disposal. Good idea, I will inspect that along with the drain pump. Any idea how I can clear the error codes? I ran a complete diagnostic cycle and the error still shows

@ashwin04

The error won't clear as long as what is producing the error is still present.

Getting completely through a diagnostic cycle error free may clear an existing stored code but it won't if the problem hasn't been fixed.

Also an 8-1 error code is a "slow drain" problem as opposed to being a no drain problem. This means that it takes too long for the dishwasher to drain or longer than what time period is expected if you prefer. So even a minor blockage or an intermittently faulty drain pump can impact on the time it takes and not that it means that it doesn't drain at all.

@jayeff - I double checked the check valve and also replaces the drain pump. I am now getting 6-4 error upon running a diagnostic cycle. Any tips before I give up and buy a new dishwasher (don't really want to do that thought). thanks in advance
