Water Dispenser Dripping Oily Gummy Substance

I noticed our GE Profile refrigerator is leaking some oily, gummy fluid onto the dispenser valve plate.

I wiped it up a few days ago and didn't think much of it. Now, I see it running down the plastic valve actuator plate you press on to dispense water. I believe it's dripping into the collection pan at the bottom of the dispenser - I can feel it. It's slimy in the water that collects there.

What is it? Where is it coming from and what do I do? This unit might be pretty tired - it came with this house built in 2006.

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

Have you checked the condition of the water filter if there is one installed?

GE Profile Model Number(s): PSHS6RGX/PSHF6RGX

With the help of a small mirror, I can see up behind the plastic actuator plate and I noticed a glob of amber-colored substance dripping down from behind a rubber seal. I'm sure this is where it's coming from.

The water filter was changed two months ago and it's tightened down. There is nothing leaking inside the refrigerator.

I have no doubt this refrigerator is past its prime. Having it repaired at this point might not be worth it.

It needs to be serviced, obviously, but the question is do I spend the money or invest in a new refrigerator?

What is the ice like, is it clean and clear or does it look contaminated?

Not sure as the model number you posted is actually two slightly different models but one of them shows that there's a water tank assembly, part #WR17X11440 (example only to better show what it looks like) and this is used to store and cool the water before it is being dispensed.

I'm wondering if there's something lodged in there and perhaps removing it and flushing the tank out or simply flushing it out until the dispensed water runs clear may help.

It depends on the condition of the refrigerator.

It's nearing the end of its life being 17+ years old, but this doesn't mean that it won't last a lot longer.

Check what a service call would cost and also ask about what the part may cost.

Obviously the repairer won't know until they see it but maybe they've come across this problem before and know the cause.

Worth an ask at least.
