If your display is not appearing in any way; when you plug in the charger are you getting any vibrate pulse signal from the tap-tic engine? If the display is in question the first test is plugging into known working charge cable, and test for charge initiation pulse on connecting charger.

You first should try hard reset using charge cable. You should see or feel vibration pulse when charge cycle is initiated. If you don't feel momentary vibrate pulse when connecting charger; but you are certain it is active in the app.... really this could indicate defective display! Curiosity, I would think if as you say the fitbit is active in the app, are you getting any kind of indication of data reporting> In your app I would also check notifications are not turned off!

If you decide to replace display; I recommend using hot air with maximum heat temp at 130c approximately 45 seconds preheating do not repeatedly reheat or risk battery damage or main board damage.

If tap-tic is defective I don't think it will power on regardless of known working display. For the cost if you replace display screen, you should replace battery by default. You must however be very gentle handling micro components particularly it can be extremely difficult when reconnecting delicate ribbon cables. Not everyone has digital microscope camera because I inspect all connectors prior to any reassembly, and you may need a decent holder fixture when attempting to reconnect battery in particular.
