Why is my laptop shutting down randomly?

I have a Dell Inspiron 14 (5482) 2-in-1.

My laptop is a few years old, and has its original battery. I know that the battery capacity has degraded a bit, but it otherwise functions fine and I use it daily.

Very occasionally, I will be using my laptop on battery power (performing light duty tasks like word processing or internet searching) and it will just suddenly go black and become unresponsive. The only way to turn it back on is to plug it back in, and it still shows that I have plenty of battery life left. After turning it back on, I can unplug it and continue using it on battery power.

I assume that many people will suggest a new battery, but does anyone have any other insight on this issue?

Sorry, sounds like you need a new battery. My Dell battery is garbage too. I use mine on the charger all the time.

Yep, definitely sounds like a battery issue to me, unfortunately if it doesn't do it on power then that is the most likely option. As lithium batteries age, their internal resistance rises and therefore the current that they can safely output falls. If the laptop is demanding more power than the battery can handle, then it will shut off until you plug it back in. It likely tripped a over-discharge circuit in the battery hence why it refused to boot until you plugged it into power again. Hope this helps!
