Diverter valve is not spinning

Dishwasher brand: Whirpool

Model: WDT790SAYM3

Whirpool dishwasher diverter valve is not spinning. I have checked the voltage on the blue leads to the diverter valve and I get only 10V 60Hz. One of the youtube video was saying it should be 120V 60Hz. I also checked the diverter pump with by directly applying 120V 60Hz to the diverter and diverter is working. What else can be broken that will reduce voltage supplied to the diverter valve? The water pump is working fine. Everything else seems to be working well.

The diverter valve motor (part #W10537869 supplier example only) is a 120V motor. It's also shown on the blue label on the motor in your image

Did you test for voltage between just 1 blue wire and an earth? One side of the motor will have the full 120V AC, the other side will be a lot less due to the voltage drop across the motor

Here's the tech sheet for the dishwasher that may help.

On p.5 is the diverter valve circuit, although it doesn't show the circuit on the control board except for the triac which is basically just an electronic AC switch.

You may have to check at various accessible points in the circuit to find out why there isn't the full 120V AC available.

Be safety aware as you're dealing with lethal AC voltage.

The tech sheet also shows how to run the diagnostics so you can check for any error codes and what they mean - see p.3

Thanks for the reply and thanks a lot for the schematics.

I have checked the voltage on two leads that supply voltage to the diverter motor. and I got only 10V. I did not measure the voltage on those leads while they were connected to the motor.

Like people suggest using directly 120V from the outlet to test the motor. I measured how much voltage is supplied by the dishwasher when it is running and I got only 10V.

It sounds like it could be a control board problem if it does not deliver full 120V AC. :(

You could try testing the voltage at the control board points as shown in the schematic.

P4/2 and P10/1 should have the full 120V AC on it as this is the side that the active power supply is.

If p4/2 is OK but not P10/1 it may be a faulty harness connector e.g. corroded, loose etc and this is causing the voltage drop

Thanks for the information.

I was just curious what is the purpose of the diverter valve and what will happen if I do not use it at all. I can remove the disk that is rotated by the diverter valve. Now, water will go to both arms, though with lower pressure, but based on my observations so far pressure it enough to reach dishes and wash them.

The diverter valve is used to direct the water either to the spray arms or to the drain i.e. it blocks off one direction or the other depending at what stage of the cycle it is.

You don't want the water to be draining when you're trying to wash.

The circulation pump (wash pump) should pump with enough pressure to ensure that the spray arms rotate. It is the water pressure that makes them turn.

Place both of the spray arms in a remembered position i.e. side to side or back to front, start the dishwasher and let it fill. Allow it to wash for a minute or so then open the door and check if the arms have moved.

This dishwasher has two diverter valves. One is used to direct the water either to the spray arms or to the drain. The second diverter valve directs water to the bottom spray arm or the top one. Here is how it works. There is a chamber with one input and two outputs. Inside this chamber, there is a disk with a hole. The disk spins, which is how this diverter selects where to send water: lower arm or upper arm. It is a mystery to me what is the real purpose of this diverter valve. I have taken out the disk and now water goes into both arms at the same time. The dishes are as clean as before the diverter broke.

I have a question. I believe.the diverter motor that pumps to the spray arms has a magnet attached to a pump .when energized I'm sure it polarizes the poles thus spinning the pump. My magnet is broken. Actually has a Crack on both sides. One looks like it may be factory the other defenently is a fracture. This would stop my diverter from pumping water .would it not ?
