New oven has 4 wires but house has only 3

The house supply has 3 wires Red , Black & Green ,

The oven has 3 terminals labeled 1 ,2 & N plus the ground ring connection green .

The oven is a Chef premier model # Euc5350w , i am residing in australia if that helps

Would i just run a bootstrap between the ground and neutral ?

I only have a cheap small meter , i just tried it upon the red & black supply wires which maxed the meters needle so the red and black are opposite polarity ? It did the same also between the green and red, between the green and black there is continuity

.[ UPDATE]So i got brave and wired it up , linking neutral terminal to the ground/green , black to terminal 1 red to terminal 2 and the hotplates work but oven doesnt , switched the positions of red and black and oven works but hotplates dont .. can anyone please help ?

Hi @clinthaffy

Sounds as though it is a 2 phase oven i.e. you need a 2 or 3 phase supply to the house and then the oven needs to connected to 2 of the phases.

FYI it is illegal in Australia to do electrical installations if you're not a licensed electrician. Electricians need to submit a form to the electrical authority and give you a copy for any electrical work done. Also the insurance companies won't cover any damage to the property if it is found that it was caused by faulty wiring done by an unlicensed person.

How many wires are there from the poles outside to the house (if you don't have underground power of course) - 2, 3 or 4?

2 = single phase

3 = 2 phase

4 = 3 phase.

underground of course :( so youre saying it may not even be able to be installed (Sad trumpet noise)

well im on an acreage and power does go to a pole in front paddock , and then underground to house , perhaps i can go for a drive down to the road and look ?

Not sure as I'm not an electrician and not up on the wiring rules.

I don't know if a two phase oven can be connected using two supplies (each with their own fuse) from a single phase power box or whether this may exceed the load and you need to have more than 1 phase supplied to the property.

You can check your power box and look to see how many cartridge fuses are located close to the power meter.

If there are 3 then you have 3 phase power, if only 1 then a single phase. 2 phase is rarer now as it is just as cheap to install 3 phase.

If you have 3 phase then all you need is for an electrician to run in an extra supply to the oven from the power box and connect it to the oven with the existing supply

if you only have single phase supply maybe ring an electrican and ask if your oven can be connected to it or if you need a 3 phase supply

It never hurts to ask ;-)
