Card reader replaced but still not reading cartridges

Update

There certainly is a pin missing.

This problem may have begun with a bent pin, but at some point I must have knocked it loose because there definitely is one missing. See photo below:

Note: This problem is new, the Switch was new and worked for quite some time and no there where no obvious moments of dropping or damage after which it suddenly had this issue.

I began getting the error with the stock card reader on this Nintendo Switch Lite:

The game card could not be read.

Please remove and reinsert it.

If this message appears repeatedly, please check the following page on your smart device or PC.

1) Oddly enough, the Rayman Legends cartridge still works, just fine. But it is the only game cartridge that does.
2) None of the other cartridges work on this Switch Lite.

3) All other cartridges work on other Switch Lites and our Docked Switch.

4) Downloaded games still work.

So I ordered a replacement card reader and just installed it. No change. The issue persisted.

But I noticed during the processes that the original card reader ribbon was notched by some sort of pressure from the mount. I've included a picture.

I installed the new card reader, connected the ribbon, and then took it back out. There's a slight impression, hardly noticeable in the new one.

I used a magnifying glass to observe the port, there is no obvious damage or debris, though there is a gap in one of the nodes (picture included) but I am not learned enough to know if that is a defect or abnormality to begin with.

I'm curious if anyone has replicated this issue or heard of what might be the problem on the Switch side. I doubt the brand new card reader would have the same problem (bought it straight from ifixit).

Hi Aaron,

Yeah, that connector on the motherboard is definitely suspicious. The gap there is not normal, and when combined with the apparent damage to the flex cable, it's a fairly safe bet you've got a bent pin in there.

With a pair of fine tip tweezers, magnifying glass and a bright light, you'll want to see if you can straighten that pin. It looks to me like one of the pins is bent down too far and is going under the flex cable rather than on top of it like it should. You just need to get it bent up far enough that the flex cable goes under it; if you bend it up too far it won't make contact and you'll be in the same boat with that one pin not making contact. I'm betting that's the issue for most of your games; for some reason your Rayman Legends game doesn't seem to need that pin to work, while the other games all do.

That's about the only remedy you've got for fixing this yourself unless you've got pretty good SMD soldering skills, because if that doesn't work you're going to have to replace the connector. It's got a lot of pins on both sides of the connector, so this is a case where it's going to be best to leave it to a professional.

Hopefully some of our professional repair technicians can chime in and confirm or deny my diagnosis; this is just my opinion, but I have worked on a lot of circuit boards in my career and that's what it looks like to me.

Good luck; let us know how it goes!

Thank you so much for the response, this all plays right into my inklings. I'm confident enough I can give both methods a shot thanks to the details you provided. I recently purchased a soldering kit from ifixit to be able to repair our consoles and stuff, this might be a challenge for after I've built up some skills with it.

In the meantime, I'll give the pin fix a shot, and if not, maybe check out Switch Lite motherboard prices.

I'll definitely post an update at some point! :D

Sounds good Aaron! It does look doable, especially since the pins are exposed and won't require a hot air station to work on.

By the way, I ran across a connector that appears to be correct for your Switch Lite.

Thank you so much! That is awesome of you. I edited the post with an update: There definitely is a pin missing, so I'll need that connector. XD

Hi Aaron!

Just curious if you were ever able to fix this? I ran into a very similar situation with the pins and will likely need to replace the connector, but my soldering skills are also a bit limited. I would love to know how this turned out for you!

Thanks!
