How do I fix the charging port?

the port inside is all messed up and you can kind of see the metal pieces (no idea if that's normal) and it looks like a piece is actually missing, like the plastic the charger fits around (idk) but it wont charge, just got new charger. its also a pretty old ds lite (has not been powered on for over 3 years) but just tried to get it up and running. wondering if i should just take it to a shop but wanted to see here first. everything else works fine, no messed up buttons, or really bad scratches. it was probably jammed with the wrong chord and broken im thinking

Hi Romi,

First of all, if you could take and post a picture or two of the inside of the charging port, we'd have a better idea of what you're dealing with.

If you're interested in trying to repair it yourself, check out @jayeff's answer to another user with the exact same problem.

How to remove charging port on the DS Lite? - Nintendo DS Lite - iFixit

I do disagree with one statement he made, that you need SMD (surface mount device) soldering skills; the connector is a through-hole type so surface mount skills aren't required in this case.

Here's just one of the many places that part is available from.

If you're not confident of your soldering skills and don't know someone who is, then yeah, it's time to head for a repair shop.

Hi @dadibrokeit

No doubt you're right.

I did a zoomed in inspection of the image of the motherboard before I answered the post you linked and if it is a hole through type then it seems that it is the only thing on the board that is as everything else appears to be smd soldered.

If it is a through hole type component it is unusual that it is then soldered on both sides? of the board though, component side as well as underneath.

Cheers

Hi @jayeff, I strongly suspect that was done to provide more physical security for the connector since it will presumably be the heaviest used one. Through hole connectors are going to stay in place a lot better than surface mount ones, and soldering it on both sides is like putting a nut on both sides of a screw to secure it.

With surface mount, the only thing holding it in place is the adhesion between the copper trace and the fiberglass/resin it's mounted on, so through hole would seem to make more sense on those connectors subject to abuse.

Hi @dadibrokeit

Fair enough.

it sounds like a damaged to theDS charging Port may need to be replaced would mean that new port would have to soldered on maybe a fuse on board has blown as well or some bent pins may need replacing Need skill with a soldering iron and Multimeter skill may be involved not having benefit of pictures also the battery might need replacing
