There is no guide to removing that adapter other than de-soldering it from the board which would again, involve some skill in soldering, but not so much as soldering each pin to the respective location on the ribbon cable. The fact that you said it sparked scares me a little. I would highly recommend you do not experiment with the leads with the power plugged in unless you know what each of them do, otherwise you could very well short the system and then it really will not power on.

At this point i think the best advice for you is to disconnect the power from the system and get a tool like needle nose pliers that can help you bend the pins back to their upright position and aligned with each lead on the ribbon cable. If you notice there are 10 copper leads on the ribbon cable and there are the same amount of pins on the adapter. Make sure you have the all lined up and not cross-contacting other leads. Please take extra care that the cable is secure before testing to prevent sparks.

Well you are certainly in a bind. That part that you are missing is the backing which supports the pins. It is simply a piece of plastic but without it behind the pins, there is nothing to prevent them from moving out of place. The most effective solution is to solder the pins to the cable, but I would only suggest you solder pin to cable lead if you are experienced at soldering small circuits.

I'm also wondering where the pins are. Unfortunately from your picture i cannot see if they are in fact there at all. Make sure your cable is tucked behind those small gold pins sticking up from that connector; and if the pins are broken, well then my friend, you are back to soldering but this time, you would have to carefully remove that adapter and solder the ribbon cable directly to the motherboard. (not fun at all)

In the instance that those wonderful pins are in tact and all pointing straight up, and supporting the ribbon cable in place, then i would tuck that cable behind the pins, test the system by touching the power button, and if it comes on, the get some silicon sealant and apply it in the place of the broken white plastic piece to prevent the cable from dislodging.
