The camera shuts down as soon as power it up

I press the on/off button and the lens protrudes, the shutter opens for business, the preview panel lights up, the indicator light blinks green, then the camera immediately shuts down and the lens retreats. I have changed batteries and switched out SD card, that doesn't help.
