I got a vintage snare drum with a wrap called "mother-of-pearl" but a teenager put brown spray paint on it. I've been researching and as far as I can tell the wrap is made of cellulose nitrate or celluloid acetate. I know nothing about these materials. What can I use to strip the brown spray paint off but try not to harm the original wrap? If I do harm the wrap, can I fine sand and polish it back? I don't want to irreparably etch it.

EDIT: added a few "after" photos.

@e30m20b27 from your research it appears to be made from a celluloid called "Pyralin". Appears to be a common material for old snare drum wraps. Try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and lots of elbow grease.Do NOT use things like like acetone or lacquer thinner. Isopropyl Alcohol is okay to use. For some more ideas check on here and always try a small area first. See what works best for your drum.

Your answer was spot on! I got half the drum stripped with just wet Magic Erasers (5) and elbow grease. My arms are sore but I'm really happy. Thanks so much. I have isopropyl alcohol as well, I'm going to reserve it in case there are spots I can't reach into with the erasers.

@oldturkey03 I finished the drum - can't thank you enough for the tip. It was exactly what I needed to get started. I've had the drum in a box for 12 years. I tried green Scotch Brite pads and Goo Gone once years ago but I quickly stopped that and put it back in the box. Tried 91% isopropyl alcohol on a few stubborn areas and also quickly stopped because it left a white film. 100% of the paint was removed mechanically with water/ Magic Erasers. I polished the plastic which was also a new skill for me. After research, I made the decision to get "Micro-gloss" (apparently used in aviation, by artists, and model makers) Holy crap! It made the drum glass-like. For the hardware, I soaked everything in Evaporust (another amazing product) and then used Maas metal polish (a friend recommended and I found it to be 'ok' not great). The end result is wild. The drum looks stellar! BTW it's a Ludwig ("WFL") "Paramount" 14" x 7" snare drum from the late 40's. I'll put a few more photos up. Thanks again.
