Why does my UPS keep tripping a circuit breaker on my main board?

My UPS keeps tripping my mains (at least one of the circuitbreaker it is connected to). Regardless of which plug I use in the wall, the moment i switch on the UPS it trips my mains board. The UPS functions though as I am able to connect devices and use the battery power -- as long as the mains arent connected to the UPS. Faulty board inside the UPS? Could it be the circuit breakerinside the UPS which may be faulty?

...it probably has to do with the capacitors...either the capacitors are bad, or the DC inrush is tripping the breaker...you could start with the time constant of the capacitor against the breaker curve.

Hi @fmariette ,

What is the make and model number of the UPS?

Mains supply circuit breakers trip due to the current flowing through them exceeding their rating.

If it is only the UPS that trips the breaker then there is a problem with it drawing more current than it should.

The UPS would have to be opened and tested to determine what the problem may be.

Have you tried other power outlets that use another breaker at all? Just wondering if you only tried outlets that were all connected to the same breaker, whether connecting the UPS finally overloaded the breaker due to it having too many other appliances etc, already connected to outlets on it, i.e it was already operating near its limit and connecting the UPS tipped it over the limit.

Most households have two power breakers (or fuses) so the outlets are split between the two.

As I understand it, the original poster's question was about a circuit breaker on their UPS or perhaps on their computer's mainboard, not the power mains.

@i_break_it

I read it differently i.e. "UPS keeps tripping my mains (at least one of the circuitbreaker it is connected to)..."

Usually circuit breakers are situated on the household mains supply power board.

"Mains" is the terminology used for the household power supply, at least where I am but perhaps as this is a worldwide forum maybe not everywhere.

You can only answer based on what is written and what you think is meant as there's no universal terminology used.

Searching online these are the terms that can be used in the USA

"utility power", "household power", "household electricity", "house current", "powerline", "domestic power", "wall power", "line power", "AC power", "city power", "street power", and "120 (one twenty)".

In the UK and Australia/NZ it is known as "mains" or "mains supply" when referring to household electricity (or even piped gas) supplies.

Also generally computer motherboards i.e. mainboards don't have circuit breakers on them per se. They do have DC smd type fuses for various functions on the board e.g. DC backlight power supply for the screen etc, but not an AC mains power inlet fuse though. These fuses if they blow for whatever reason have to be replaced as they cannot be reset.

You're probably correct. I was going by the title of the post: "Why does my UPS keep tripping a circuit breaker on my main board?" but the post itself does make it sound like a mains breaker (and the term "mains" is used smilarly in the US).
