Why is there a circle with a line thru the circle on my ibook?

The circle with a line through it is called a prohibitory sign and it means that a critical file is missing that won't allow the computer to start up. The only way to fix this is to put the osx reinstall disk in that came with your computer in and reinstall osx. This will keep all your data but will put all the needed files back on.
