My 3002 Honda Civic Ex overheats onlyI’ve had the head gasket replaced

My 2002 Honda Civic Ex engine overheats during freeway driving of 30 minutes or more, only when the a/c is on high. The air starts to blow hot, I turn the heater on and the cooler gauge returns to normal, instantly. I’ve had the head gasket, radiator, radiator cap, and thermostat changed. I’ve taken it to several shops, no answer. Please HELP!!!

Have you had the A/C system looked at? Could be the culprit, even tho it’s kinda weird that when the A/C is on full blast the car overheats.

May I suggest the following:
- change your oil (make sure to use the right kind, it’s often in the owner’s manual.)

- getting your radiator lines looked at, as they are probably old and worn given the car’s age.

A/C wasn’t working. Had all the a/c components replaced-dryer, condenser, and system flushed. The overheating required a HG (head gasket) job.

@karay1991 interesting. though it makes sense, head gasket leaks causing water to run into the engine's oil passages and exhaust...did you have your crankcase looked at?

Hi @karay1991 ,

I’m wondering if there is a problem with the fans in the engine compartment, i.e. the radiator fan and the condenser (A/C) fan.

Perhaps check to see if the fans are both working when they should be.

Here’s an image taken from the service manual that shows how to test the fan circuits if they’re not.

I only learned there are two fans this week. Being 20 years old, I believe that the condenser fan is the culprit. Will check and update you. Thanks a lot.
