Dishwasher loses power early in cycle

Hello all,

My whirlpool dishwasher has started behaving very oddly. When I start a cycle, the basin will fill with water, but after about 40 seconds it completely shuts off. It’s as if it is losing power, as none of the buttons on the control panel work, nor do the indicator LEDs. I know that this is not an issue with the latch, as I have disassembled the door, and checked continuity on the latch. I also ended up completely removing the latch and shorting the switch to ensure that the connection is made, still losing power. I confirmed that the wires are all in-tact and the insulation is still good. Here’s the weird part: if I remove the bottom panel to reach under the washer, I can push up from under it, and it will make the panel lose power. Once I stop applying pressure, it will come back. It appears that something is either loose or shorting. Do you guys have any idea how to troubleshoot this?

Hi @njubelt ,

What is the model number of the dishwasher?

@jayeff thank you for responding—it’s WDF520PADM3

Also I should mention that this is not a fuze nor a tripped breaker

Hi @njubelt ,

I would stop pushing it up from underneath with the power still connected as there may be lethal exposed AC voltage on a terminal connection that you can’t see but may accidentally touch.

It sounds like a loose connection more than a short, because shorts usually blow fuses.

Initially it may be better to disconnect the power from the machine and then turn it over and inspect for any obvious loose wiring connections.

Also it doesn’t have to be the Active (L1) wire that is loose, it may be the Neutral wire (N) instead. Without a return path for the power i.e. the Neutral wire, it won’t work either.

Here’s the tech sheet for the dishwasher that may help.

Whilst it doesn’t show the routing of the harness wiring it does have a wiring diagram that shows the L1 and N wires from the power cord, connected to the electronic control board P4 connector pins 1 & 2.

If you have an Ohmmeter you can connect from the appropriate pin of the dishwasher’s power cord plug to each terminal in turn and then check if you lose continuity when you push up from underneath etc.

This may help to see what and where it may be happening.

Intermittent connections are not easy to find but at least you have a wiring diagram.
