Coils always frozen. Fridge freezes drinks and freezer stay cold.

Hey, any help is appreciated. I have attempted many times to fix this. I defrosted it many times, let it st unplugged for 24 hours a few times and even changed out the thermistor and that didn’t work. My next attempt (if you think that may be it) is to change out the Refrigerator Freezer Defrost Heater & Thermostat. I think that may be it but would like some thoughts on that idea before dong so since it is $50. It makes sense since it isn’t defrosting?

Hi @wpbteacher2 ,

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

If you have a DMM (digital multimeter) it would make more sense to disconnect the power to the refrigerator and then disconnect the defrost heater from the wiring harness and test the heater element using the DMM’s Ohmmeter function to see if it has continuity or not before deciding to replace it. The resistance value of the element could be anywhere between 25-200 Ohms depending on the type installed but it most certainly won’t test open circuit unless it was faulty

If the heater tests OK with the meter, then you could also prove that the wires from the control board to the heater are also OK.

You would need to have the service manual to know how to “force” a defrost cycle so that you could then also check if the control board was supplying voltage to the heater or not if the wiring tests OK - see below about service manual and diagnostic modes.

I may be wrong but mostly with Samsung refrigerators, they use a NTC thermistor (Negative Temperature Co-efficient - as temp increases, resistance value of thermistor decreases - known values at temperature points) for both the freezer temp sensor and the defrost thermostat and their resistance values are what the control board uses to decide what to do. You could also use the DMM to measure their resistance but you would need to know the model number of the thermistor to know what the resistance value is at the temperature that you’re measuring it at the time to know whether it was OK or not.

If you don’t have a DMM then search online for Samsung (insert full model number of refrigerator) service manual as sometimes you can be lucky as it may be available online for free.

In the manual there are instructions on how to enter the diagnostic mode so that you can test individual functions of the refrigerator’s operation e.g. compressor, fans, defrost etc, also wiring diagrams and tables with the sensor resistance values etc, plus a lot more.

If you can’t find one then perhaps replacing the defrost heater may be the best option

Jayeff it is a RF263BEAESR/AA. I am handy but have never tried to use a multimeter. I have one and will try to attempt to use one.

@wpbteacher2

Here's the service manual

Go to p.54 and then p.55 to view how to get into the diagnostic mode and what the error codes mean.

The thermistor resistance value versus temperature table is on p.63 and the troubleshooting pages start on p.65

Here's a link to just one supplier of parts, just to give you some idea of their location and costs.

There are other suppliers online that may suit you better. Just search for "RF263BEAESR/AA parts" to get results.

With the DMM when using the Ohms function to measure resistance ALWAYS disconnect the power from the refrigerator as you can damage the meter when measuring resistance and there is power in the circuit. Read the meter's user manual to familiarize yourself with how it works. If it hasn't got one, search online using the meter's make and model number to hopefully find one.

Hopefully all this will help you to find and fix the problem.

Good luck

I just found that on p 54 as well but didn't get to ther other pages yet. You are fast! Thanks for your help!
