Some keys on keyboard Q504U do not work

Hi, I have an ASUS Q504U laptop that has a perplexing problem. I am running W10 and noticed a couple of weeks ago that my C and number pad 1,2,3 keys do not work. Those appear to be the only ones. I took off the bottom, cleaned the keyboard connector on the motherboard as well as the cable itself and reseated it to no avail. I started messing around with the Windows drivers - uninstalling the PS/2 101/102 keyboard drivers and restarting and letting the drivers reload. Then tried to do an update on the drivers for the keyboard. Still nothing, so I started looking at the BIOS version. It is the latest version - 307. I downloaded the next previous BIOS version, 304 and loaded that. I let it boot normally, then once again removed the keyboard drivers. Upon restart, I logged in and BAM - all the keys worked - C, 1, 2 and 3 - however they worked for about 30 seconds. While Windows was doing its thing (I assume downloading drivers) the hard drive light was going nuts and then they stopped working again and I never could get them working again.

In desperation I ordered a replacement keyboard from Ebay and installed that last night. In anticipation I booted it up - and wouldn’t you know….the same C,1,2,3 keys still do not work! So….at this point I thinking it has to be Windows….so I downloaded Ubuntu and put that on a USB stick. I removed my SSD drive that had Windows on it and booted to the USB and opted to start Ubuntu from the stick. Ubuntu booted and I tried to create a new folder with a C in the name…..still nothing. So at this point I am thinking it’s the BIOS again…flashed back down to 304 (which worked for about 30 seconds) the first time in Windows and still no love. I don’t know what else to try and am ready to drive over this dang thing.

Is there any way to reinitialize the UEFI? I don’t mean “OPtimize” by pressing F9 in the BIOS, but reinitialize it back to factory specs? I am thinking there HAS to be some weird keyboard driver that is getting loaded in the UEFI but I don’t know that for sure.

I am fresh out of ideas and would very very much appreciate some help! I am a mobile worker and need a laptop with a keyboard that works! Thanks!

Hi,

Have you tried connecting a USB keyboard and checked if the same problem occurs when using it?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I revisited this again because it was driving me nuts. My approach this time was to try the keyboard keys within the BIOS only. I removed the drives to make sure UEFI did not have a chance to start. I pressed F2 while turning it on to get to the BIOS and tried the C key inside the Asset Tag field. No joy, so I took the back off and unhooked the main battery as well as the BIOS battery. Try again, no luck….so I turned my attention again to the keyboard connector. Using the magnifier on my phone, I looked at the connector on the motherboard and saw some dark spots on some of the pins. Condensation? Rust?

Not sure but I know enough they need to be shiny. I got some electrical contact cleaner and used a paper towel and a razor blade to gently remove it so the pins were shiny again. I also gently cleaned the ribbon cable of the keyboard with electrical cleaner. I reseated the cable and made sure it was pressed tightly against the connector. Booted to the BIOS again and son of a gun, it worked. My C and 1,2,3 keys all work. I reassembled the machine step by step with hard drives, batteries being reinstalled and tested it along the way. It was indeed a hardware problem that was sporadic and so I thought it was a software problem.

Again, thank you all for your answers and the time you took.

so windows 10 is getting to be more and more famous for these kinds of problems. My asus still will not charge the battery for the life of me and its a similiar issue. Now i haven’t fully gone at it to fix it but i do have enough experience to know what and why. First thing first, try to restore your computer to the point before it started and see. If it works then its definitely in the windows data. if it is still present then i would say its a bug that managed to creep in. second, if you can boot into a “safe mode” then you can see if its coming from any app that could have been causing it. if its working fine in “safe mode” then start looking at what apps you have installed around the time it started. last two suggestions i have for you is to either do a complete wipe and reinstalled of windows 10. just make sure you back up all files you want or need cause this is gonna turn it back to like the day you bought it, and if you dont want to do that then get onto the website for windows 10 and get chatting with an assistance and they can remotely help you by a remote connection and will 90% of the time fix it. good luck!

Hi @willyharwood57 ,

Create a Win 10 battery report and check the status of the battery.

Compare design capacity versus full charge capacity. Perhaps the battery is faulty

@jayeff

I have replaced the battery and it has done nothing. I have tried to run a battery report and it gives me this "Unable to perform operation. An unexpected error (0x10d2) has occurred: The library, drive, or media pool is empty." i have gone through countless blogs and hours with microsoft and all it can conclude is there is an issue with the driver. it was due to the update and so far no one can give direct answers for the fix.

Got a bit lost, which update?

If it is a Windows update can you roll back or uninstall it?
