SD card jammed in backwards. What now?

I gifted my Nikon D40 body and lenses to my kid, who promptly put the SD card in backwards, and now it won’t budge. Let’s assume the slot is fine and will work if the card is extracted. Is anything less than a total breakdown possible? I learned not to just unscrew things willy nilly with these cameras a long time ago. Any resources on play by play to attempt this? Thank you!

Hi

There is a tutorial on iFixit on how to remove the motherboard: Nikon D40 Mainboard Replacement

Unfortunately, taking out the motherboard does require desoldering, but other than this it’s a pretty painless process. You will not need to tear down the entire camera.

Before replacing the card reader, you can try to carefully bend the pins back to their original shape.

Still, i’m inclined to believe that all will be fine once you’ll get the card out.

To prevent further damage to the reader, do not use excessive force and make sure you only grip the card and not the slot itself.

Cheers!

Bogdan
