just replaced the lightning port on iphone 8plus. now when i make a call my voice is muffled. but if i put my finger over the back mic or just place a piece of tape over it its all ok. all other functions are fine. turning off noise cancellation doesn’t do anything either

If your voice sounds muffled on the other end of the line you will need to replace your charge port assembly as there are two microphones on it.

I have done that already. Original symptom was mic for speaker phone was low and muffled. Now the problem is with the main mic. But as I said. If I put a piece of tape on the back mic near the camera, the problem goes away.
Actually I’m having the exact same problem, but mine is an iPhone XR running the latest iOS 14.5.1 as of today. Likewise I have to put a tape to cover the rear-facing mic, but the problem is, every time when I need to take a video with the rear camera, I have to peel off the tape or else the sound with the video will be muffed, and put back the tape afterwards.
It is so troublesome to use a phone like that!
