Why is my speedometer working intermittently when my car warms up?

Ive been trying to figure out this problem for a while. My speedometer works, but only works until my car warms up. It zeros out and the odometer is blank. Its making my transmission shift erratically and eating gas. I have replaced the speed sensor located on the top of the transmission and looked at the connector and connector wires. They all looked fine. Other than a little bit of oil coming out of the sensor. Maybe transmission oil? Around the sensor was dry and I seen nothing that would be dripping on it. But its still doing the same thing. Nothing changed. There is no other problem with the dash lights everything else is working fine. On colder days it works longer. On warmer days I will start her up and have nothing. Sometimes it will kick on randomly while I'm traveling at high speed. I am a female trying to learn how to work on cars. Please try and stray away from acronyms I would appreciate it. Or help explain what they mean?

Hi,

Not sure what you meant when you said “Other than a little bit of oil coming out of the sensor. Maybe transmission oil? Around the sensor was dry”. Did you mean that around the sensor was dry but the sensor itself wasn’t?

Did you replace the o-ring when you replaced the VSS? Was the “oil” covering the connector at all?

Here’s an image taken from the Automatic Transaxle section of the Toyota Camry 1999 Service Repair Manual (RM654U) that mentions replacing the o-ring.

Have you scanned the OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics 2)port for any error codes that may give an idea of what is happening?

Update (11/08/2020)

@Laura Schepers ,

Oil coming out doesn't sound right and if it is covering the connector (do you mean the electrical connector?) it may be causing electrical problems.

The o-ring should stop any oil coming through where it is bolted on.

Maybe thoroughly clean any oil etc out of the connector and ensure that it is clean and dry.

Then check if the speedo works and if it stops check again for any oil in the connector. If there is any its got to be coming from somewhere.

There are two wires going to the sensor and if there is no more oil and the speedo still fails then with the engine switched off, disconnect the wiring to the sensor and then use an Ohmmeter and connect it across the two wires. There should be a reading back to the ECM. If there is then gently flex the wiring near the connector and see if the reading changes indicating a fractured wire in the connector. Also check the connections of the ECM in case of s loose connection etc.

The pin number are shown in the image

Here’s an image of the sensor wiring (from a ‘99 Camry so your should be the same)

Yes the outide was dry but the sensor did have oil coming out of the connecter piece. The new sensor came with a new o ring but I had to use the old drive gear. It looked fine no chips or nicks. And was moving fine. Maybe i need to replace that? Thanks for the schematic representation lol
