Broken 8 Pin Main Connector on Motherboard?

The Dell Inspiron 3650 my dad uses suddenly stopped working after a power outage. Since the computer does not turn on at all, we thought it was the power supply. When we opened up the computer and tried to fix it, we found out that the power supply lights up green when the 4 pin connector is attached to the motherboard, but the power supply turns off when the 8 pin main connector is hooked in. Is there any way to replace or fix the 8 pin main connector attached to the motherboard or will we have to buy a new motherboard?

Hi @greyvanadium ,

It’s sounding like a motherboard problem not a connector problem.

The connector is only a way for the power to be connected from the PSU to the motherboard.

Unless there was a problem between one or more pins in the connector itself, which would seem highly unlikely, the problem is in whatever components on the motherboard are being powered by the power supplies into the connector.

You could try searching online for (insert motherboard ‘board number’) schematic to hopefully find the schematics for the motherboard so that board level fault finding can be attempted, but if it is in the traces on the motherboard and not a component then it can’t easily be fixed if at all. (The board number is printed on the motherboard)

Oh man, I will try to look up the motherboard schematic. Probably will end up having to purchase a replacement. Thank you for the fast reply:-)
