Sound is coming through, but mic not working

So I have a few Xbox One controllers with audio issues (they belong to my children, so they’ve probably been rough putting the headset cable in). I bought a replacement for the 3.5mm port and fitted it. However, the sound works, but not the mic. Can’t see anything that would stop the mic working and it’s driving me nuts.

Does anyone have any ideas?
