Spitting Oil out Exhuast when starting

Went to start my mower today and when I pull the chord to start it, it just knocks and a puff of white smoke comes out. I also realized that there is oil, a good amount, dripping out of the exhuast. It's been sitting right side up, never turned over, so I'm at loss for what to do. Any info anyone has would be great.

I would say you flipped it and that’s why you’re getting that but it could be a gasket try checking the gas for oil

Its sat for the winter and I haven't touched it. There isn't oil in the gas. I just put gas in it for the first time this spring. Didnt want gas sitting in it while not being used.

Most likely is that you are overfilling the oil. Second would be leaking piston rings.

I haven't put oil in it this year since the spring has just started. I checked it and it's at normal level. How would I check the piston rings?

Of course the piston rings are around the pistons and the the engine would have to be torn down to inspect them. This usually does not happen until a mower is several years old.
