I have a copy of New Super Mario Bros. that loads just fine on my DSi XL but won't load on my New 3DS XL. It detects the game, but when it loads it says that an error has occurred. The 3DS loaded my copy of Pokemon Black just fine.
I'm going to continue trying things to see if I can get it to work properly, but if anyone knows of anything specific that could be causing this issue, I'd appreciate a solution.

The game cartridge could be damaged or have dirt inside it. Try cleaning it with a slightly damp cloth..

I've decided that it must be an issue with the cartridge itself (tried a bunch of other cartridges, including another copy of the same game, all worked fine), but that is good advice anyway if anyone else is having an issue.
Thanks youre cartridge could have been a factory fault.

i apologize @ifesbob ... i have searched the website and they claim that all games are backwards compatible, except for those games that had accessories. with this information, i would check the cartridge pins for any damage. if this is not the case, then i am at a loss. my apologies and good luck.

@jostewcrew thanks for the help anyway. I don't think it's the pins in the cartridge because after cleaning the pins it started working immediately in the DSi (I had to fiddle with it a bit first usually), but unless the cartridge slots in both of my 3DSs is damaged (which I suppose isn't impossible), then that wouldn't make sense either.. I'm going to give the slots a clean regardless.
