Washer will not spin out.

My washer will fill and agitate, drain no problem but it goes into spin mode and just sits there with the Spin light on steady while doing nothing. I can switch it to Drain/Spin manually and it will spin out but it won’t do it on its own, I did replace the lid switch already thinking that was the issue. Any advice would be helpful before I buy another part that doesn’t actually need to be replaced haha, Thank you.

Hi @drmccluc ,

What is the model number of the washer?

Do you actually step the cycle timer switch to exactly the same spot as it does automatically to make the spin start or one notch further?

It may be a faulty contact in the timer switch.

Just a thought

Thank you for the reply Jayeff, the number WTW4950XW2. I replaced the lid switch and now the washer will proceed through the entire cycle until the “Done” light blinks but it won’t have spun out at all. Once again I can put it on rinse and spin or drain and spin and it will go. The belt looks good and has tension so I don’t think that’s the problem, I’m just not sure how to know if it’s the motor or clutch or something else at this point, thanks for your help.

Hi @drmccluc ,

Did you happen to notice if there is a "tech sheet" taped to the inside of the machine somewhere?

Hopefully if there is it will show how to get into the diagnostic mode for your machine which may give some clue as to what the problem is.

I was thinking along the lines of there being a problem with the shift actuator but can't quite figure out why the machine would work in "manual" mode (when you select the spin option) and not when it steps automatically through the wash, rinse , spin cycle

Hey Jayeff,

The model number is WTW4950XW2. I have the Repair book you mentioned, I can’t remember the exact fault it throws at the moment but I too think it may be the actuator.

Solution 1:

Drive Belt

Inspect the drive belt to determine if it is broken or if it is loose on the pulleys. If the drive belt is broken or loose, replace it.

Solution 2:

Clutch

The clutch assembly makes the connection between the transmission and the inner tub. It helps the tub to gradually get up to the proper spin speed. If the clutch is worn out, it may prevent the tub from spinning. The clutch is not repairable—if the clutch is worn out, replace it.

Solution 3:

Drive Motor

The drive motor might be defective. However, the drive motor is rarely at fault for this symptom. Before replacing the drive motor, first check all of the more commonly defective washer components. If none of those components are defective, consider replacing the drive motor. To determine if the drive motor is defective, first ensure that the motor is getting power. If the drive motor hums but doesn’t run, is noisy, or does not turn freely, replace it.

Solution 4:

Transmission

The washer transmission might be worn out or defective. Transmissions have gears in them that can fail causing the washer to not spin. However, this is almost never the case. Before replacing the transmission, first check all of the other more commonly defective parts.

Solution 5:

Door Lock

Inspect the door strike assembly for damage. If the door strike is broken, replace it. The door strike is not repairable—if it is broken, you must replace it.

NONE of these 4 replies take into account the fact that the user is able to get the load completed by using the Drain and Spin setting on the main cycle control dial!
