Hi I am haveing the same problem. Although I have not yet changed the backup battery.

さんによる

Hi! My problem is somewhat similiar. mine turns on but when i GENTLY place it somewhere, it turns off and erases me work

さんによる

i've tried everything in this thread other than disassembly (which i doubt is necessary because this calculator is less than a year old) and still nothing is working :(

さんによる

I tried everything listed on this thread and none of it worked for me. However, I simultaneously pressed DEL, CLEAR, and ON at the same time and THAT WORKED!! It gave me the message RAM cleared. Hope this helps someone ls troubleshooting.

さんによる

I went through all the TI suggested procedures on a very old TI-83 to no success. I took it apart (special screws) and found the contacts between the batteries and the circuit board had worn through. After very slightly bending the contact wires, it works. 20 years later, still a great calculator.

I was able to fix mine by removing the four AAA batteries and then pressing the on button for thirty seconds. I put the batteries back in and I was in business.

Thanks Paul! That worked for me!

さんによる

Worked great for me, too. Thank you.

さんによる

Thank you very much! It worked the first try.

さんによる

THE SOLUTION BELOW WORKED FOR ME - slightly different from what's written above. Got my 10+ year old TI-83 Plus to turn on :)))) From TI's webpage: " Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold [CLEAR]. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and press [ON]. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release [CLEAR] and then press it one more time to remove the message.

さんによる

Have no idea why, but that worked! :D Thank you so much!

Step 1. Remove one AAA battery. Press & hold Clear button for 5 Seconds. Replace the battery and turn on.

if that doesn't work go to Step 2.

Step 2. Remove one AAA battery. Press & hold DEL button for 5 seconds. Replace battery and turn on.

if that doesn't work go to final step.

Step 3. Remove all batteries including the back-up battery for at least 5 minutes. After 5 minutes replace all batteries and turn on

Thank you so much! I was discouraged when step one didn't work, but step two worked!! This will save so many calculators from being thrown away

さんによる

tried several things. this one worked great. thanks. btw, did replace the back up before doing this but that did not seem to help. Maybe I needed to do both?

さんによる

If all else fails and nothing turned it on, remove the batteries and back cover, expose the 3 surface mounted chips and lightly with a fine soldering tip reheat all the leads

I checked all the normal procedures and tested the ribbon cable for continuity all was fine. Heating up the chip connections powered it up

Thanks a ton whoever u are @Mathnasium cuz u saved my life man and ur solution worked! May god bless you. :)

If the above doesn't work, then you need to look at the contact springs from the batteries to the main board. The board flexes slightly when buttons are pushed and this causes there to be wear between the spring and board contact pad. In my calculator, the spring wore thru the contact pad. To reach the contact pads, you simply remove the 6 screws along the outer part of the cover. Then remove the screw covering the flat backup battery - just above the batteries. Get a small flat blade screwdriver and pry along the edge of the upper and lower covers (not the loose cover). Work along the edge and unsnap the 3 snap joints. There is one at the top center and one on each size approximately centered along the length of the battery. When you get the cover removed, look at the pads. You will probably see a black dot but if you look under a magnifying glass, you will see the bare circuit board. At this point, look at the pads to be sure there is no corrosion on them. It will look like a white or green powder. Remove with alcohol and Q-tip.

Turn over the the battery cover and with a pair of needle nose plyers, bend the two outer spring fingers inward a bit. When you put the covers back together, you will be able to see thru the two square holes by the inner 2 batteries if the springs are making contact with a different location on the pad. A flashlight and magnifying glass is helpful. Best to put the batteries back in place and see if it will power on. If so, then reinstall the screws and your back to a working calulator.

Worked for me after none of the above RAM clearing tricks helped. The wire contacts had worn through the gold contact pads on the main board and into the green. Just had to bend them slightly to re-establish contact. Thank you for saving my calculator from a sorry fate!

さんによる

thanks for the help.. indeed , the machine gets older and the contacts re disappearing. just move the spring contacts a little bit to the side and got my calculator again. cheers !!!!

さんによる

This fixed my 10 year old TI-83+! Thanks.

さんによる

What type of screw driver do you need to remove the 6 screws on the back of the Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus calculator?

さんによる

I took out all of the batteries and left it there for 20 minutes and it worked

I tried the other solutions minus disassembly, but I flexed the body of my calculator by grabbing both sides and pushing the back with my thumbs. After that it displayed random numbers and letters, and then ram cleared and it turned on!

Wow... thank you so much! Not sure about the reasoning behind this but it worked so thank you!

さんによる

Unbelievable.... I tried all of the other suggestions before I was ready to give up. I decided to give this a whirl before she went to the trash and what do you know... It worked!! LOL This is the stupidest fix I've ever seen regarding anything and I created an account just to THANK YOU and let others know that this worked for me. I really appreciate it, this calculator got me through high school and engineering school and sat in a drawer for 8 years until I needed it again. THANK YOU.

さんによる

I honestly laughed when I read this fix and only did it because it's not like I was gonna make the calculator worse. But holy crap...it worked! I was laughing in disbelief! I grabbed the calculator by the top and bottom and pressed into the back really hard with both thumbs and voila! Thank you!

さんによる

my jaw dropped! Yes, this worked! Tried all solutions, minus disassembly- I did this and then held the "on" button for 30 seconds and got "RAM cleared" message.

さんによる

Worked for me!

You say you tried all the ideas on the post and nothing worked - correct? Are you sure the battery contacts are touching the metal pads? Where are you located? You could send to me and I can troubleshoot or we could do a video chat to see your calculator and maybe find a fix. I promise to return the calculator if you send it. I am a retired engineer and have no use for that particular calculator. Just here to help others out.

I am in upstate NY - Rochester.

I’ve tried it all! Let me know your thoughts i am ready to give up!

I saw your comment I’ve literally tried everything but like everything and my calculator won’t turn on at all, I need it in two weeks for my final exam :(

I tried all the above with my 22+ year old TI-85 and it didn’t work.

Then I rebuked any demons present in the calculator in the name of Jesus. Immediately I noticed the screen was on but the lightest contrast setting. I adjusted the contrast and now it’s working again!

Have you looked to make sure the display pins were soldered fully to the board? New batteries may help but only with the overall power. Can’t remember the display connection but if there are no wires from the board make sure the interface material is cleaned with alcohol. Don’t use petrol or acetone as they are aggressive solvents and may damage the materials.

Well, all the steps I took finally worked. It's like brand new. I was just short of removing the display connector strip and using jump wires, which could have either worked or trashed the calculator.

Tweaking the springs, cleaning with alcohol etc. are all symptoms that there is oxidation. All the solutions offered above may produce temporary results, maybe just because the spring is now touching a spot that is not yet oxidized, but the oxidation will continue. You need to use the spray that they sell in automotive stores to clean the car battery: it reacts with the oxidation making the contact surface pristine. After that the pocket calculator springs to life as new!

I tried everything (except disassembly) and nothing worked and then I noticed my STO button slightly stuck. SO…if nothing else make sure you don’t got a stuck button!

Hi,

I tried all different option and nothing helped. Then I just tired the regular steps to clear RAM as if the calculator is working good with the batteries all installed.

I turned on (The screen was blank, but I pretended that it is working), then

  1. Pressed 2nd MEM (that is the second function of the + key)
  2. Selected 2.
  3. Selected 1 (All)
  4. Pressed Enter

In few seconds I turned it on and then adjusted the contrast (2nd, up or down navigation buttons multiple times) to see the regular home screen.

Hope this helps!
