Unit will not bootup.

I have a 160 gig iPod classic which I have attempted to replace the hard drive along with the ribbon cable and the mother board. It still powers up and resets with the Apple logo for a few seconds and then the red X of death. iTunes does not recognize it. Could it be the new hard drive needs to be formatted in some way?

Steveo, the new HDD will usually "formatted" by itunes once it gets detected. Your error sure looks like a HDD error. Check your connections carefully make sure that the cable is in right and that the clips are down to hold the cable in. Make sure it did not go underneath the connector (happened to me before) Does your computer recognize the iPod as an external drive? Also access the diagnostics menu and see what happens. The best way of checking would be a Zif-to-USB connector to check the integrity of the HDD. When you purchased your parts you did get the parts for the iPod Classic and not for the 5th Gen. Again, at this point I believe it is your HDD that is malfunctioning.

Thanks oldturkey03 for your insight. I actually have 3 Samsung HS161JQ drives, one of which I just bought online as a reconditioned tested unit. None of them seem to work. I have a second mother board I've tried and three different ribbon cables. I really like your idea of the Zif-to-USB connector so I can verify the drives functionality. That has to be my next step. Thanks again.

you are welcome. The USB to Zif adapters are inexpensive and really help out when it comes to diagnosing a bad drive.....good luck to you.

Well there's only one problem, the hard drive used in the 6th generation iPods used a 18 pin CE-ATA ZIF interface while most iPods use a 40 pin ZIF interface and most 1.8" notebook hard drives us the 40 pin. There are no 18 pin CE-ATA ZIIF to USB adapters (external enclosures) on the market that I can locate so far. I'm not giving up yet but it's getting a lot more difficult. Thanks again olkturkey03.

Steveo just out of curiosity, what type was the original HDD.

Hello oldturkey03. I bought two iPods off eBay as parts units. They are both 6th Gen iPod Classics. The both came with Samsung HS161JQ (160 gig) drives. By the condition of the units it would not surprise me in the drives are toast. It's amazing what someone can do trying to open an iPod with an axe. I'm looking for a reliable vendor to purchase a replacement drive if you have any suggestions.
