Device repair information for the first generation of V-Moda Crossfade Wireless headphones.

No sound from left ear.

The left wire on my headphones may have gotten pulled a bit as I am no longer able to get sound from the left side. Is this something that is repairable or worth opening them up and taking a look? These are out of the manufacturers warranty.

WOW. I have had this issue for so long but like others said, inserting the headphone jack (not connected to anything else) while playing music via bluetooth (inserting it just til you hear the sound cutting out) and then wiggling the jack around until I hear the bluetooth working in the left ear WORKED FOR ME. At first I was inserting the jack all the way and that was not working. Then after plugging it in only part way until I heard the sound start to cut kindof worked. It was only when I wiggled the jack around did the problem actually fix. So wiggle it. Just a little bit.

If you have a dead side when connected with a cable, you’re going to have to open them up. A solder connection probably failed. EPA and EU approved lead-free solder can fail for no real reason at all. Premium products like V-Moda usually use high silver content solder that can be just as good as the lead doped stuff, but who’s to say their factory partner didn’t cheap out for a run.

If it works fine when wired, but there’s a dead side with Bluetooth there are some possible easy fixes. First, try to reset the firmware by turning the headphones on, make sure nothing is connected, then hold the volume up and down buttons for at least 3 seconds until you hear a tone. If that doesn’t work, start playing something over Bluetooth, and while it is still playing connect an audio cable (not charging) that isn’t connected to anything on the other end. Leave it connected just long enough for the sound to stop playing, then take the cable out. Credit to iFixit user Rohith for that last solution. If that still doesn’t work, it’s probably a failed solder connection.

Were you able to solve this? I have the same problem but it happens only when the headphone is connected using Bluetooth (works perfectly on both ears using the cable) and sometimes you can actually hear the left ear but the sound has a really low volume.

""Know this is a bit late, but for me plugging the cable back in while they were connected via bluetooth fixed the issue. After you unplug the cord just reconnect bluetooth""

And it worked for me

Rohith's comment solved it for me

This solve the problem for me as well!! thanks, I should mention that when I was inserting the plug into the jack I noticed that the problem appears to be in the jack cause a couple of times I didn't insert the plug fully and some times the volume went back to normal, another time the sound stop altogether in both sides and another time I got sound from the left and nothing from the right. Thanks to whoever discover this solution and to the people who post it, and for those who may encounter the same issue just keep fiddling with the cable because it works!

This makes no sense to me! New M1 Mac Mini, no microphone included, obviously, decided to use my Crossfade Wireless as a mic input, 1st gen CF I think… no audio from left ear cup over BT, not from the computer, not from my phone over BT either, despite it having always worked up to now. Reset the firmware of the headphones as suggested above to no avail, did the cable plug-in then quickly pulled the cord out and that fixed it.

WHY did it fix it? Will it stay ‘fixed’? Do I need to talk with V-Moda about this? Is it a problem with any of their other headphones?

Should I investigate another brand entirely?

This also worked for me, although it only worked when I used a different audiocable then the one given with the Crossfade 2. I also tried resetting the firmware, but that didn't work either.

So I’ll add this as a separate answer, as I haven’t seen it mentioned yet.

The left ear on my Crossfade 2 wouldn’t work when using Bluetooth, but it would using an audio cable. (I use the one given with the Crossfade). So I tried the above mentioned fixes, the firmware reset and audio cable plug-in and plug-out, but it still wouldn’t work.

I then tried the cable plug-in and plug-out with a different audio cable (in this case the audio cable from an Astro A40 TR), which did in fact fix the problem.

I have no idea why, but it worked. It may be worth a try if you are having the same issue as me.

Edit: I also wanted to add that there was a difference in volume after the left one started to work again. This was fixed by maximizing the volume on my laptop, and then putting it back to normal.

I'‘ve had two pairs of Vmoda headphones, the first pair (crossfade) failed in the left ear just after the warranty ran out so Vmoda’s fancy named six star customer service team sold me an immortal life upgrade (which I was happy to pay for), but after import tax to the UK ended up being about the same price as a new pair anyway. My second pair (crossfade wireless), the bluetooth failed around the end of the warranty time (wireless have 1 year warranty, crossfade have 2 year). Having a 1 year warranty on expensive headphones is pretty useless especially if the bluetooth breaks!! I’ve never heard of bluetooth breaking. I assume they are aware of the issues because they made a decision to provide less warranty. Anyway, they still worked wired so I didn't mind too much. Six star customer service team (makes me laugh that name) weren’t particularly helpful they offered me the immortal life programme again, which I guess is their solution and might be more affordable for US customers. 2 year later, so 3 years after purchasing the left ear has now started stuttering, I won’t even bother to get in touch with their customer service.

Honestly, I’m not sure if this is an acceptable life expectancy for the product, you could say they both out lived their warranty but 600£ on headphones for 5 years use is pretty steep, and i doubt i’ll buy a new pair.

I wouldn’t expect their customer service to do much if it’s out of warranty but then I guess that’s the point of the warranty. Just a bit misleading they call themselves six star customer service (why are they better than five star?? )

I’m probably going to try take them apart at some point and see what’s wrong, they’re both pretty useless to me otherwise.

Hi,

it happened to me too with my Marshall headphones.

It may be that the tin welding inside the left side speaker broke.

You just need to open it and weld the cable again with a tin soldering :)

Quite easy and cheap stuff :-)

Had the same issue with my Crossfade, Earlier left speaker was working but right speaker was having this issue and sometime i had to dab it to work properly but later left speaker has stopped working and right was working sometime and sometime not.

Tried reset it by holding + and - button together till 3 sec when until you hear a wave sound. then tried to connect through Bluetooth again but only right speaker was working.

Then i tried Jack plug-unplugged method with provided vmoda cord many times, this one also not helped.

Then tried plug-unplugged method with different 3.5 mm jack just 1 time and yeah! it worked. Strange! but yes it worked.

I have been having the same issue, as many of us have :(
I have contacted the support team and was only directed to the life time warranty program, as many of us have :(

I found a different (tempory) solution, as all the a.m. solutions didnt work for me. I noticed that if I hold the left ear cup on my ear, and move the right one around (towards my nose, and to the back of my head) that the sound eventually returns. Sometime very low, somtimes completely.

This leads me to believe that it is a cable issue or a solder issue. Anyways, very annoying!

Another issue… anyone able to use the V-Moda app? All I get is a loading screen.

Small update: I noticed that when the left side sound starts fading away, if I then raise the volume to full blast the sound returns to normal.

Thanks for the solution @rolongui. The Crossfade 2 sound amazing but I’ve gone through two warrantied pairs, on top of this really strange issue of the headphones working perfectly fined in wired mode while in bluetooth mode one ear just doesn’t produce any sound. Wish it was better because the actual listening experience is so good. The reviews that shower praise on their build quality or “durability” should be disregarded. Metal parts do not equal durability if the wires inevitably fray and expose their copper or one ear randomly stops working.

I found another fix for this problem. I maxed the volume and oddly enough the left ear started to work again.

You could also try to do this after you do the 3.5 mm jack jack insert and reset if that part doesn't work because I did that before so it could have helped.

I've experienced this issue intermittently a few times during the 5 years I've owned my Crossfade 2 Codex headphones.

I found a helpful explanation on root cause and clever way to resolve the issue on reddit here:
