2006 iMac not booting, no chime and black screen

Ive got an 2006 iMac EMC-2111 today, and it doesnt want to boot. When I press the power button, leds 1,2 and 3 light up but not the fourth, I get no boot chime and the screen stays black. I have tested the RAM on another computer and it works fine.

It currently has no HDD installed, but I dont know if that would prevent the mac from booting. The pram battery was also replaced. I am currently installing os x 10.6.3 on a usb drive, maybe it would give me some sign of life when i plug it in?

Im totally new to repairing Macs as I have only used Windows machines my entire life, so I dont know what to do to get this iMac running again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

LED 4 - Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

Hold a flashlight up to the display at an angle and see if you can discern the desktop, after you have tried to boot from a system.

If you see it we can go for the inverter. Cheap fix.

I couldnt see anything on the display even with a flashlight being held up to it.

Do I need a working hard drive to get something to show up on the display?

Plugging in the installer-usb did not change anything.

Did you put a system on your USB drive that you can boot from or just an installer?

You need a system on that USB drive so you can format the internal drive and then install a system.

You've got the cart but no horse.

Before I install a system onto the usb, how can I know that the Mac actually works? Led 1,2 and 3 light up and the white front led stays on. The fans also ramp up to their highest speed. Or do I need a working os for the fourth led to light up and display something on the screen?
