Dash Temp Guage Stays Low

My dash temp gauge is staying on cold. I have just finished replacing the temp sensor, (on the side of motor) temp switch (near thermostat), and thermostat. I even tested the plug by bypassing the sensor and the temp gauge went all the way to the right.

The motor gets hot but I noticed that I can easily squeeze the coolant hose and there is no resistance. I am at a loss. Can anyone help?

@seanpsills remember that your gauge/sender does not read hot air. So if you do not have enough coolant or if your waterpump does not work properly or if you have large amount of air in the system, It will not work properly. so top off the coolant level., bleed the system (including your heater core and then check again.

@oldturkey03 How can I check the water pump? Also I am sure that there is air in the line. How do I bleed the system? I am not the most mechanically inclined guy.

Hi @seanpsills ,

To check the water pump, with a cold engine, remove the radiator cap and then start the engine.

After a while when the set temp has been reached, the thermostat will open and you will see the coolant begin to "flow" in the neck of the radiator, being pushed through by the water pump

Be aware that as the coolant heats it will expand and rise out of the neck of the radiator. So as soon as you see it being to flow switch off the engine.

Be safety aware when you do this as the engine is running. Make sure that the emergency brake is firmly applied and that the transmission is in park (auto) or neutral (manual)
